BS34 fast Idle was created by ThatGPzGuy
Hey Gang, The GPz is running like a champ these days so I am working on some of the detail items that nag at me.
One thing it does when starting is it will immedietly rev to 4000 RPM. Is this normal? It seems high so I usually close the enrichment rod the to the 2nd position where it immedietly dies. We play that game a couple of times with me adjusting the rod until it will idle at 2000 or so. Is there a fast idle adjustment on these carbs or is this indicative of soemthing else wrong? All the boots are new, the airbox is stock with a K&N and there is a kerker on it. The pilots are two sizes greater than stock (I think). Besides an occaisonal popping on decel it runs great.
TIA,
Jim

If it idles high and uneven when warm and hangs high on decal, idle mix screws may need to be turned out a quarter turn or so until it evens out. The popping on decal is I sighn that it's lean and so is the revving and dying at start up. I have a 1015cc with bs34rs and at only 1 3/4 turns it is too lean. I think I run them at no less than 2 turns to get a stable idle. When they are out too far gas will spit back out the carbs when you revv the motor, If you think the adjustment is good to go (or was before) try cleaning the carbs. Hope this helps

Sounds like a vacuum leak. The carb holders/ intake manifolds are probably cracked. Or you have the vacuum hoses to the Tee for the Air Switching valve under the tank leaking.
Try finding vacuum leaks. Get it to Idle down, then spray some brake cleaner around the carbs on the Engine Side, to see if the RPM changes.

Once it warms up it idles fine. It's just when it's cold and I pull the rod all the way out to start it immediately goes to 4000-5000 RPM. That causes me to shove the rod in a little until I can get it to idle at 2000 or so. It usually dies while I am doing this which causes me to do the whole procedure over again,. Like I said that may be perfectly normal I just don't like to hear it rev that high stone cold. .

A high idle under choke like that is normal for BS CV Mikuni carbs. Only thing you can do is keep playing around with the setting and see if you can find a place where the idle isn't quite as high.

What setting? Do you mean the enrichment rod? The thing is there are two detents in it. Does it do anything between those?
When I try to just go to the first detent (about 1/2 choke) it is difficult to start. If I go to full choke it will usually start and rev to the moon. When I push it back to the first detent it will usually die.
My problems are compounded by a starter clutch that has about had it.
