Mikuni VM 33 question was created by anotherZ
Hey all, I am sure this has been discussed somewhere here but couldn't find it. Will Mikuni VM 33s work ok on a stock LTD 1000 (stock I mean the engine, has K&n pods and a 4 in 1).

I am currently running the VM 26s with accelerator pump (working) and 122.5 main jets. The bike runs well in midrange up to about 7,000 rpm, but to me it feels I would get a much better top end with bigger carbs. Obviously the VM 29 smoothbores would be ideal, but I was hoping to spend less and go with the 33s....

Let me know what y'all think! Thanks.

yes, 33 's will work on a 1000 .......i personally like 29's better but they are too costly  but remember you are getting a carb designed in the 70's......If I had to ante up for carbs now I would go with mikuni rs 34 or 36 mm or you can go with keihins . I like the mikuni's rs series as parts are readily available...my personal preference .
i do have 3 sets of 29's but they are like gold ingots  .....and I'm not selling them...for projects. :S

IMO, 33's will be too large.

Could probably tune for acceptable performance at WOT.

But the difficult issue is tuning for really good performance at lower throttle positions.

My understanding of the reason -- which could be incorrect -- is that the "signal" or "suction power of air flow being pulled through the carb bores" at lower throttle positions is too weak when 33's are fitted to stock or lightly over-bored large Kaw fours.

33's are more successfully fitted to very large over-bores.

The larger smoothbores have a bad reputation regarding low end tunability; can't say for sure if it is deserved or not. The BS34s are easy to tune and provide great all around performance on stock OR modified bikes.

Good Fortune! :)

I did a quick ebay search and it looks to me that the Mikuni BS 34s are obtainable, whereas the RS 34s are almost in the price range of the VM 29 smoothbores. Wiredgeaorge seems to like the BS 34s....anyone else have an opinion on those?

I had a set of 33s on my 1105 motor. They ran great wide open but would drive you nuts trying to get the to idle consistently. I traded them straight across for a set of 29s which I like much better. They want over $600 for the old 29s, I personally would buy a new set of 34s myself for a little more money. On a stock motor id just rejet the original carbs or find a set of 76 KZ900 carbs on Egay, they were the last of the pre emission carbs & will run perfect with an airbox with stock jetting. Theres no reason these carbs wont run good all the way to redline. Are you sure your petcock screen isnt plugged up or the vent in the filler cap isn't plugged ?

I think both petcock and vent should be fine. I am using a Pingel petcock and if I open it I get the Niagarafalls in the bottle...

Hello...I have a 1982 LTD-1000 and I have a MTC 1200 kit with web cams and the 33 smoothbore carbs has turned it into a monster. I think they will be too much carbs for a stock motor. I also have a CSR-1000 with a Wiseco 1075 kit with Andrews 3x cams and its Super with the 33 carbs.

After reading all the posts, it seems like it's worth it spending the extra buck and going with some smoothbores...
