77 kz650 carb breakdown and cleaning
29 Mar 2014 08:51
My 77kz650 has been sitting for a period of time that I assume will make cleaning the carb a necessity. What kind of problems should I expect? Old o rings, gaskets or anything that might need to be replaced. Are replacement parts going to be an issue?

The VM24SS carbs are very friendly; you should only need to get new carb bowl gaskets. Install them dry (no sealant). You do not need to separate the carbs from the rack to clean them unless you plan to use an ultra sonic cleaner. Just use carb cleaner on the parts and orifices and you should be fine. Wear eye protection when spraying cleaner through the orifices. Do one carb at a time so you do not mix parts between carbs. Ed

Awesome!! Any reliable sources on gaskets? I'm sure I could Google it but that doesn't always go as planned. If I can knock out both problems in 1 shot I'll be riding this weekend!!

Ok KZ friends. I ended up taking the carb off! I removed one bowl and I was shocked by the amount of build-up! After an extensive cleaning of jets bowls and floats I was pretty happy, however.... Before cleaning I manually moved the throttle up and down. It was slow and slugish. Half way through I tried it againand it was much better. Got done completely and tried it they went up once and down did it again and they don't act like they want to go back down! What am I missing??
