Good lord. That's massive amount of foam... I'd be surprised if you could get ANY airflow through that! First thing I would do, would be to replace it with a quality air filter.

EDIT: Do what Ed said.

just tried to order them from Partzilla and they are on manufacturer back order with no ETA. Guess I should try Leons cut to fit foam? Will it be about the same density as stock?

If Partzilla says they're on backorder the Kawasaki.com website may be wrong and I owe an apology to the dealer for calling him a butthead. You may want to check with Z1E to see if they can get them; if they can't Leon's foam may be your best bet for now. Ed

No apology needed ed, he is a bit of a butthead. I don't think he likes old bikes

So these homemade filters could cause the bike to just fall on its face at 7000 ? Starving for air I guess? I tried taking the filters out completely but it did not want to run at all.

A lot of the time the bike needs to have everything just right to want to run. The filter you have is making the mixture too rich and removing the filter is making it too lean.

Am I supposed to oil that UNI foam when I get them cut out? I have a spray can of K&N air filter oil in my cabinet

I let it warm up just now and ran it to the end of my block and it fell on its face. I turned around and headed back balls to the wall and it fell on its face at just about 6900rpm. It does it in every gear. While it was flattening off, I turned off the key and coasted in. I pulled both plugs. They look more white than anything. It is not backfiring but I can keep it at that flat spot and as soon as I shift, it goes like hell again till just around 7000. Its gonna be about a week before the uni foam gets delivered. Is there anything else I should try? I just ordered a manual from ebay last night so I can get info on timing. Should I try swapping out my CDI with my parts bike? Maybe the rectifier? I've got 2 other sets of carbs, should I try to drill my main jets bigger? I'll check the advancer tomorrow but I would think the advance would be coming in a lot lower RPM than 7000 BUT I'm no expert

Forgive some wild guessing, but if not already done, would check into what the FSM says about the "pulsing coil" and the "igniter" as to whether and reasons either or both might fail at higher rpm.

And assure that the igniter has a good ground through the black/yellow wire.

Good Fortune! :)
