This is not really a serious problem; more of a 'wondering why.'
I own a 78 KZ1000A2 and am working on the carbs. I'm wondering why the drain plugs on float bowls on carbs 2 and 3 face each other toward the middle of the bike instead of toward the outside (parts book shows them this way, as well)? Seems like it would be more convenient to switch them so that the drain plugs on the left 2 carbs face the left side and those on the right 2 carbs face the right side. I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether there's a good technical reason why Kawasaki placed them like this before I switch them to suite my preference.

They're suppose to face away from the middle just like you think. Someone messed up the reassembly and probably didn't notice until they had already mounted the carbs back on the bike.

As I understand it, the bowls need to be swapped, not the entire carb.

That was my initial reaction too, but then I looked at the Kawasaki.com parts diagram and noticed they seem to show #3 facing inward. It's hard to tell which way #2 faces in the diagram. Very strange. If it was mine I'd look at swapping #2 bowl with #3 bowl to see if there's any reason not to swap them. Make sure the inside of both bowls are the same configuration. I can't image why they would have #2 & #3 facing inwards. Seems like it just makes draining them more difficult. Ed
