Sorry I dont have any experience with 400/440s but hope this helps until someone who is familiar with your model comes along

I got it working a lot better by putting in the Canadian parts, and tweaking the float level just a smidge.
My wife asked me if I still loved her - I said "Honey, I love you more than new carburetor boots ! "

I then used a mikuni vm34 I bought off amazon. I'm still dialing in the carb but, it's so much more responsive then the cv carbs.

Anyway the last time I talked to the owner he was basically stamping/casting rubber parts one at a time in his basement,as far as I know he still is.
The 650 Yamaha guys swear by him.
