EPA had manufactures remove all the good stuff like, methylene chloride and cresylic acid.
The overpowering smell of old carb cleaners came from the Cresols in carb dips. If it got on the skin, it would last for days.
I worked in a machine shop for three summers and used this to clean parts, with little if any protection?
I had a gallon of the old stuff in 2011 and it would strip off old paint and grime in 2 minuets. The old stuff worked great. I used it on my rack of VM 29 Smoothbores, you tell me if there clean?
I then un-knowingly bought the new formulation of Berrymans and it was crap. It will help but doesn't come close to the old stuff. I left a painted part in for 2 days and 10% of paint came off.
On the positive side, the new carb dip doesn't kill you as fast either.

Ok, I see that.....but I went to NAPA to buy the professional product over a year ago and the guy said
"we cant sell it anymore due to EPA regulations, we only sell this kind now, the other cans got sent back"
You can get it on-line......it's very expensive but it kicks ass.

Still have an old 5 gallon can of that at work and it still works. I always knew it had creosote in it by the smell of it and you are right that the smell stays on you.
