Yes wintergreen oil! Did you pick up this info from our friend Nils? (NobleHops) he posted this from another forum.jdvorchak wrote: Just putting this out there. I have successfully revived rubber boots and other rubber items which are either too expensive to replace or no longer available. I used a 1:3 mixture of winter green oil and xylene. Soak for a couple of days and when dry they are like new and stay that way. Mix and keep it in a capped container because your garage will smell like spearmint or winter green chewing gum for quite a while.

I went right to the chemist! I purchased a 1000ml (33oz.) plastic jug of this 100% institutional grade wintergreen oil.
There are 4 oz. bottles for sale on ebay and amazon.
it is called (Methyl Salicylate) it is not un-stable, was able to ship regular USPS. MSDS was not too bad. when I get some other small containers, I might have some 4 - 8 ozs. for sale. does smell clinical! I opened it up and put a small amouNt in the basement tool room. Smells good!
MSDS reads HEATH -1 FIRE - 1 REACTIVE - 0 PPE - H.

Now buying the chems isn't cheap. Had over $30 invested but that's still cheaper than new boots. Plus the left over mixture is still good. I still only used about 1/2 of the wintergreen oil so I have plenty left. Every once in a while I throw some rubber part in there and saves me a trip to the dealership or eBay. So far that initial $30 has saved 8 air box boots and countless grommets and various other rubber parts.

rrsmsw9999 wrote: That sounds like it would work great, do you think the solution could be brushed on boots before removal? New ones are nice, but the problem is getting old hard ones off. I have cut the last two set I worked with off with snippers cause they were so hard I could not get em to budge. R
The xylene would probably evaporate before the oil would soak in so I don't think that would work. On stubborn boots like that I've just used spray silicon and let it sit overnight. Especially where the boot meets the air box and the carb body. On really stubborn boots I was always able to push them back into the air box to gain the clearance needed to remove the carbs. Also you can use a heat gun to soften them up a little and they don't cool that fast allowing you some time to get them tucked back into the air box. Also spray the silicon where the carb goes into the cylinder "insulator". Helps a lot getting the carbs out. Less likely to tear those expensive insulators up as well.
Don't fix it until it's broken.

floivanus wrote: Silicon spray works as well, just gotta keep it off of plastic parts, it's supposed to not play well with plastic
With all do respect, silicon won't soak in like the wintergreen oil does. Silicon does soften them up some but not like this stuff. Honestly it makes them like new. As for plastic parts? I have never heard that there is a problem with silicon and plastic. As a matter of fact a lot of automotive detail shops use silicon on the plastic trim on cars/trucks. Silicon is an inert substance so it has very little effect on anything it comes into contact with. That's why it's used in surgical tubing and breast implants to name a couple.

Been doing it for years and have only changed one set of intake boots and one set if airbox boots out of 50 or so bikes, and to boot the spray is available at any parts store, walmart etc.
The z1 airbox on my bike and the airbox boot for my H2 are the more recent pieces I've treated with it
