So i've mentioned before that the previous owner had installed a Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust on the KZ650 and had allegedly re-jetted it too. The next guy had been into the 2nd carb to try and fix a "overflowing" problem and I'm pretty sure has screwed up the jetting because that cylinder now runs lean. Now with the winter months in full swing for me and the bike being off the road, I want to take this chance to pull the carbs apart, clean them up real good and re-jet and adjust them myself so i know for sure that they're jetted correctly.

The bike is a 79 KZ650 with the factory carbs equipped (Mikuni VM22SS) According to the dealer manual i have, the stock jetting is:
Main Jet: 90
Nedle Jet badge: O-7
Jet Needle: 5CL10-3
Pilot Jet 1: 15
Pilot Jet 2: 50
Throttle valve cutaway: 2.0
Design Fuel Level: 30+- 1mm
Service Fuel Level: 3.0+- 1mm

Will those be sufficient for just an exhaust change or do i need to up the jetting a bit? If you guys need to know what's currently in them, i can get that info to you once I pull the carbs, I'm kinda stuck with space being my main concern before pulling the carbs.

Thanks

Let's start from the beginning. No 1979 KZ650 ever came from the factory with VM22SS carbs; they all came with VM24SS carbs. The VM22SS carbs were only original equipment on the 1978 KZ650-B2A and 1978 KZ650-D1A. So, I suggest you take a look to see if the bike is indeed a 1979 or if the carbs are in fact VM22SS carbs. If both of those things are true, some previous owner changed the carbs. If your carbs have the orifice at the 10:00 position as shown in the photo below, they are VM22SS. If that is missing, but the carb bodies are ribbed like the ones in the photo, they are VM24SS. If the rider's footpegs are attached to the frame using one bolt on each one, the bike is a 1978 or 1977 model. If each footpeg is held to the frame with 2 bolts, it is a 1979 or later model. Ed

Its definitely a 79, Two bolts holding the pegs and I just came in from pulling the carbs out. They do not have the orifice at 10 O'Clock so, they are in fact VM24SS.

After much debating, im thinking of going with pod filters instead of sticking to the OEM airbox, so, to update my question, what sort of jetting would anyone recommend for VM24's with pod filters and a Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust?

If mine, I would keep the airbox rather than go through the headache of trying to find the magic jetting formula for pods. What is driving your decision to install pods? (I'm assuming you are not a masochist  ) Ed

That last part is fantastic, hahaha

Anyway, i like the look of individual pods (or... velocity stacks... :D ) and.... I'll be honest, on its way out of my frame, the airbox broke. the threads that hold the cap on got bashed real good and are cracked, about to fall off. Completely on me, i was rushing and trying to knock out some work so i could feel like i did something that day
