I am in the process of making a bobber out of this old 440 LTD and have come to rebuilding the carbs. I have cut the exhaust just before the mufflers and just after the cross pipe piece and plan to run straight pipes just like the are now, I also plan to use air filter pods on each carb so my question is what size mains should I use? is there a good source for an oring/gasket set that I will need to do all parts inside the carbs? Any suggestions in order to get it tuned correctly the first time? I plan to spend the money on new jets and orings etc but want to get the correct stuff the first time and hopefully someone has already done this and can save me some time. Thanks in advance.

It's very unlikely you'll get them tuned just right the first time. There are a few companies like dynojet that sell full kits so you can test them out until you get it running right

Yeah very true but there has to have been someone that has rebuilt the carbs with the same pod filters and straight cut pipes that has trouble shoot the process already and can at least narrow it down to 2 closest sizes to know where to start. i am familiar with other bikes and carbs setting but not this one yet.

OK so i am to the point where I am diving into the carbs. I will be ordering the parts I need and would appreciate some help. I will be using the stock carbs and replacing all the orings etc like normal. i will be sing the stock exhaust pipes but cut off before the cans and wrapped if that makes a difference for what main and other jets to use. i will be using two air pods probably the red ones from masterbike and new plugs. So my main question is what size main jets should work the best/ and anything else I need to do to make it easier to dial in using these components this way. Thanks in advance

Or should I get a different set of VM type carbs to help with this process. Or I think I still have the airbox, Is this a better way to go even if the exhaust is chopped already? I would rather run the pods for the looks because the side covers are not going back on but not experienced with these carbs yet so.....

Has this bike been running since you have owned it? Post a pic of the back of the air box.
What filters are you planning on using?

No it has not been running since I have owned it. I have rebuilt carbs before and added jet kits to carbs when changing pipes but I dont know what set up i would need for this application or what would be best solution. i will try to get a picture of the back of the air box tonight but its the stock assembly that came on them i am sure. Anyway I wanted to use the single cone shaped red air pods by bike master or the grey cone shaped ones listed on ebay several places and are washable no oil designed.

Those wire mesh filters are junk. I am unfamiliar with red bike master filters, could you post a pic
both side and inside views please. Also use some mufflers. Without them you will draw unwanted
attention to youself ( the cops ) . And open pipes do not help performance with unless it is an all
out race machine, which you are a long way from being. Put some small cheap mufflers on and
order a jet kit from Sigma6 for free flowing exhaust and individual filters. You should use K&N or
Uni filters. I have not sees personally any other filters tat are worth a damn. Somebody else might
chime in here with a different filter suggestion.

Ok I did a little research from the advice you gave me and will probably use the Uni brand but they are directing me to the stock filter so i assume there is a standard cone sized to fit the boot coming off the carbs that I should use? Also, I hear you on the mufflers and that might be what I intend to do but as of now just plan on wrapping the straight pipes (which were stock and now the mufflers are cut off them). Would it change the jet kit if I added small mufflers later?? Sigma6 jet kit offers Stage 1 , 2, or 3 kits for the pods filter, straight pipe set up. Which would be the one I would want and why? Thanks for the info btw

Uni makes a pod filter that comes in a package of 2. I think the number is PK52.
They make the PK series in 3 or 4 different sizes.
The inlet outside diameter of the carbs are about 2 1/8 in.
Their filters are straight, not tapered. Adding mufflers will
change jetting requirements. Stage 3 is for pods and open exhaust.
Stages 1 and 2 are for more stock type setups.

Excellent information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me. I will research these items and inquire again if I have any additional questions to make sure I have this right.
