kz750 ltd gas tank vent was created by steelhorseangel2
hi kzr's

greetings from across the pond!

does anyone know how to check
the gas tank vent lid please?
I can't find anything in the kaw
workshop manual.
i keep hearing a hissing noise
from the gas tank lid, when I open
it up. my bike starts, then cuts out.
the carbs, choke and electrics have been
checked.
Many thanks riders and wrenchers!

You will need to clean the recess groove under the cap.

Good luck,
Jim

Hi Jim

Many thanks for your photo
and advice!

I think I've found the cutting out
problem. The Kawasaki that
fitted the new starter clutch and cog,
didn't check the sparkies?...
For some strange reason he tightened
the spark plugs far too much and boy
they were over tightened.
I managed to adapt my plug socket
tool and found the plugs were all fouled
with carbon. Just changed them and
starts fine without cutting out.
How can a mechanic miss simple
problems like this. He blamed the
battery, the ignition, coils, dog, cat etc.
:-)

We're restoring a '84 Goldwing 1200 Interstate.
I bought it for my brothers 70th birthday.
He always wanted one!

Thanks again buddy!

I think the 750-4 fuel cap is vented thru the key lock. Try spraying it w a carb cleaner or wd40 to give it a flush. If you use carb cleaner or any other solvent, it probably should be lubricated afterwards. You could take it apart, but be aware that there is a big spring that could send stuff flying, hitting you in the eye.

If the rubber gasket is hard, replace it. Hopefully yours isn't as bad as the one in Rainman's photo.

Angel, the question would be why the plugs were fouled?
I know you've been through a bunch rebuilding the bike (Eric).
But I wonder if you have doubled up on the resistors in the ignition secondary? This would be resistor plugs and spark plug caps, or also resistor wires. Only one of the 3 should be resistor.

Hi Motorhead

Long time no speak!

Thank you so much for your reply.
How are you! :-)

For some tech problem. I couldn't
sign in with my original username
and password? I've contacted the Webmaster
and I didn't receive a reply?
I'd to register again?...
Who is the best person to reinstate
my original sign in etc please?

Do you remember when my starter
clutch failed? The first 'mechanic'
had my bike for the '2 hour job' for
39 days. It came back worse then
it went in. I paid by credit card!
They advised me that they would
pay a forensic engineer to write a
report and I got my money back.
The credit card company also
gave me £600 for my inconvenience.
Good hey!
The kawasaki dealer advised me
his 'technician' can do a replacement
starter assembly in half a day.
This actually took 3 months.
I phoned many times. Advised new bike
sales, are taking priority on repairing
my bike. Didn't say that when they took
my bike in. Never again Motor.
They're all bad mechanics here.
Sadly we don't do the real mechanics,
not competent or strong enough!

I didn't understand your answer, sorry!
Please could you advise me in a different
way.

When my bike was returned to me.
I was unable to test ride, due to a
sport injury. It's on a trickle charger.
My friend has started the bike periodically
for me. He doesn't ride. He has
checked the plug and found them
dry and sooty, fouling the crank up.

I don't know about resistors.
On the web, I found a website
about wiring in a relay to stop
your plugs fouling.
Is this a genuine modification or
snake oil, so to speak?

Many thanks Motorhead!

The ignition on my bike was fried when
I bought the bike. I installed a Boyer Bransden
ignition system with high powered coils.
The spark plug caps, do have a resistor on each of
them
and this is correct, the Boyer tech advised.

As my bike hasn't been ridden, due
to my sport injury. Could the
carbon on the plugs be built up, through
lack of high temp riding. Normal riding
burns the carbon off. While just
stationery cranking will foul up the plugs.
A biker friend mentioned this.

What are the brand Name, and the Part # of the Spark Plugs you have Fitted?
Yes it is possible that a lot of start ups, without getting up to Temp could Foul otherwise good spark plugs.
I remember you fitting the new ignition, and coils. But I don't recall the plugs you used.

As far as your old user name here on KZR, Bill suggested using the link for Forgotten Password. If you still have the same email address as when you first signed up as steelhorseangel then they can send the password link to you and then you can change to a new password. Otherwise I think you will have to continue as steelhorseangel2

Hi Motorhead

Thanks for your reply!

The spark recommended and fitted
are NGK B8ES, as per the Kaw workshop
manual. Yet on the NGK website
this is for a 76-77, not '80-85?
My Kaw is an American import and
not the Euro version.

The above is a summer plug and
below 10 degrees, the manual advises
NGK B7ES.

This is the info from the NGK website:-

NGK B8ES (76-77)
2411
NGK BR8ES <- ltd (80-85)
5422
NGK BR8EIX ltd (80-85) iridium
5044

I'm confused why the Kaw manual
advises different plugs?

Many thanks for your advice Motorhead!
