I'm interested in converting my LTD from the 34mm Keihin to a smaller Mikuni smoothbore carb setup. Something closer to 30mm, possibly as small as 26mm. I'm not a fan of the CV carb at all.
At any rate, I'm wondering if anyone has any input on a set that won't require any extreme modifications. I'm considering looking for '70s era KZ 650 and 750 carbs. I've seen several sets for 900's but I don't know if they'll fit. Is the spacing wider from carb to carb on the 900?
Am I just daft? I tend to see the smoothbores used more often on race bikes. That also raises a point, I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible so $1200 and $2000 sets of CR's are out of the question. I'm not opposed to using carbs from a Yamaha or a Suzuki or even a Honda if they're cheap and require just a little fab work for them to fit and function. I'm not opposed to rebuilding them and even buying screws, jets, needles, seats, floats, etc, etc as long as the carbs are cheap to get and basically intact minus the small parts. Any wrecking yard resources are welcome too.

The spacing is the same on the 650 thru the 1100. If you do a search
you will find the info. But basically for the 650 vm22 & vm24s use the
650 carb boots, direct bolt on. For the 900/1000 vm26 & vm28s use the
900/1000 boots and elongate the bolt holes to match the 750 head.
With the smaller carbs, it will choke off your top end. With either size of
carbs you can use the 650 push/pull cables.

elr658 over at the KawasakiMotorcycle.org site put VM24s on his 750-Ltd-4.
If you plan on using the stock airbox, one problem is that you would need 1981 KZ650-CSR airbox ducts, but they are no longer available. If you can't find any good ducts, you may have to go with pod filters or get a 1980 or earlier airbox (those ducts are available).
