I've looked at z1parts.net and z1enterprise for a petcock rebuild kit for my 1978 kz1000A2 and couldn't find one there. Any ideas where I can pick up one ??

I don't know where to get a kit, but you can buy all the pieces separately.

I love eBay, but I don't think any of those kits say they are for the 1978 KZ1000-A2. Ed

That was my issue on eBay nothing says specific 1978 KZ1000 A2. I don't have the money to be wasting on the wrong parts.

650ed where did you find that parts breakdown ?

That's from Kawasaki.com.

If you go to Kawasaki.com on left side put cursor over "Owner Information" then on drop down menu click on "Parts Diagrams." The click "Continue" next to "Motorcycles" and click on model/year/etc. on drop down. Once you get the list of parts for your bike you can click on the category of parts - such as "Air Cleaner" and you will see a diagram of all the parts for that category. Then when you click on an actual part number on the list under the diagram it will say if the Item Status is "Active." If it is “Active” Kawasaki still sells the part through dealers. Also, at that little page you can click on the yellow highlighted question mark for a cross reference of which bikes share that part or click on the red highlighted S to see earlier part numbers for the same part. Measure the bolt-hole spacing. It's probably either 44mm or 34mm.
If 44mm, Z1Enterprises.com has an aftermarket Suzuki vacuum petcock that might work.

This may not be much help... From Kawasakai.com for the 1978 KZ1000-A2:

51023-1375 TAP ASSY,FUEL

Model (8):
KZ1000-A1 (KZ1000) (1977)
KZ1000-A2 (KZ1000) (1978)
KZ1000-A2A (KZ1000) (1978)
KZ1000-C1 (Police 1000) (1978)
KZ1000-C1A (Police 1000) (1978)
KZ1000-C2 (Police 1000) (1979)
KZ1000-C3 (Police 1000) (1980)
KZ1000-C4 (Police 1000) (1981)

Takes patience sometimes to find that exact match, or a usable interchange - here's another possibility:

I believe the issue is that he needs a kit for a 1978 kz1000A2 petcock. Unfortunately, the one in the link doesn't list that as one of the compatible models. Ed

Perhaps - but since they DO supply a large cross section of petcock rebuild kits, might be worth checking with them more directly to see if they DO offer the specific one for that bike...

Is that model bike REALLY that unique as to petcock design, that it was the ONLY year/model to use that specific petcock?

It was not the only model to use that petcock. According to Kawasaki.com the ones in the list below all used the same petcock. It really makes one wonder why the aftermarket kits aren't available (or if available, are so hard to find) for those models. Ed
