What models came with Mikuni VM29's stock?

Does anyone know which (if any) models came stock with Mikuni VM29 smoothbore carbs? I have a 78' KZ650 D1 and I'm trying to determine how much this bike was messed with.

Thanks!

I don't believe any KZs came stock with 29 smoothbores, but I know for sure no KZ650 did. They are too much for a KZ650. Ed

If they have 29's consider yourself lucky. I assume you have a kz1000/900

It's definitely a KZ650, unless someone re-engraved a VIN on it.

If the VM29's are to big for the 650, why would anyone do it? It has pods and a 4-1 exhaust. Are there any tell tale signs I can look for that would give away engine modifications? I stripped the paint of the tank, it has some bondo and a few dents. Other then that it looks similar to the stock D1 pictures.

Thanks!

If you have a good set of 29's you are fortunate. Maybe the PO installed a bigborekit.cams too?

Sorry, was reading this on my phone last night and didn't notice that whole post that you stated 650. Is it pretty fast? Maybe someone slapped an 810 kit in it. At either rate if you have determined those to be smoothbores and the bike is not running right I would assume a stock set of carbs that fit that bike...wait, if they are indeed 29's then you might have a 900 stuffed in it. No, I just saw that pic you posted. That is definitely a 650 engine. Could you take a closer pic of the carbs?

The carb top I can see looks more like a VM 28 to me. The 29's tops were more flat and square looking.

Check the left side of your bike's cylinders to see if a previous owner replaced them with a set from a KZ750. KZ650 cylinders will be marked 652cc (see pic). Also, my understanding is that 29mm smoothbore carbs have a little brass bead inside a square depression on their side (see second pic). If this is not true maybe someone with hands-on experience with smoothbore carbs will please clarify. Ed

I'll have to double check the stamp on the engine when I get home. IIRC it's 652. As for the carbs here they are.

Broken Housing :(

I found a replacement ... the vent is on the wrong side but I should be able to deal with that.

Here's the VIN on the forks.

29 smoothbores were NOT a stock oem carb :pinch: ...... they were a performance aftermarket carb. raise the slide to see the smoothbore insert :pinch:.....look like 29's from the main jet access on the bowls

The p.o. probably needed a set of carbs and you used to be able to get used 29's for around $100 or $150......
