KZ 1000 carb sync gets a crazy hi idle was created by Smokin Sam
Greetings from a new member in Smithers BC. It's nice to have a place like this to bounce a few ideas around. I am struggling with a friends 79 KZ 1000. I am attempting to sync the carbs, a job I have done successfully on many other bikes. It seems like the idle goes up to about 3000 rpm as soon as the carbs come into sync. We have checked, fixed and retested air leaks at the manifolds, the advance unit is free, we have removed the cables and the linkage is free. There is a gap at the throttle stop so it is backed out as much as possible. The idle will NOT come down. The two right side cyls (1&2)seem to wanna be a little low on the gauges when it will idle at the right speed. I'm wide open to ideas if anyone has any.....

Did this problem just start recently? Were the carbs worked on? If they were, the problem could be the result of someone adjusting the slide height (carb bench sync) without having the throttle stop adjuster set near the middle of its range. If that it what happened the throttle stop knob will not lower the slides. Have you tried turning the throttle stop several turns in and then adjusting every sync screw an equal number of turns to lower the slides toward the closed position? This might let you then use the throttle stop to adjust the idle up and down. Ed

That sounds like the problem all right. This is a "new to me" bike with previous issues. I'll give it a try and will post up some results. Thanks.

Thanks for the great advice. Once it cooled down (and so did I lol) I tried it again and got it. I still have the two right cyls a little off of the other two but it seems to want to be there and runs great now.

Did you do a mech. sync first ?

Don't know what carbs you have but on my VM29's
the number 2 carb is the lead carb.
You set the number 2 carb mech. sync that is the base setting
other three set to match #2 carb.

When I did mine I couldnt get them right I'd
run out adjustment on at least one then read a deal on I think
the Old school performance site about set #2 first.

Awesome! I think that could be the info I needed. I was trying to set them to #3. I'll try it again with this new info.
