Carb sync issues. high vacuum on #1.

Hi everyone. I suppose this is my introductory post. I've been lurking the forums for a couple months, taking advantage of the search option. I can't seem to figure this one out though. The carbs are vm26's and do not have the air screw. Only the pilot screw. I have this at 2 turns out. 20 pilots and 122.5 mains. The motor is a 900. Valves were done last spring. Carburetors were gone thru this spring.
When I go to put my homemade sync tool on, #1 is drawing way to much vacuum. I BELIEVE this tells me vacuum leak, correct? I've been pulling my hair out. I checked the choke plunger, new carb holders, float levels checked, checked all rubber orings in carbs twice. Still, too much vacuum @#1. Also plugs are black as can be @ cylinders 1-2-&3. #4 is a good brown color. How can #1 plug be black, but have a vacuum leak?(so I think). Any help here would be great. Needle & seat?
Bike has dyna s with dyna green coils. Timing is dead nuts. Have yet to do the coil mod, but wouldn't 4 be black too if ignition was the problem here? I was getting an off idle stumble bad at 1/8 throttle. Also getting black smoke @ idle telling me too rich.

If the #1 carb slide is closed more than the others the vacuum at the carb holder will be greater than the others. I doubt that it is a vacuum leak; if it was I would expect the vacuum at the gauge to be lower, not higher, because some vacuum would be drawing through the leak rather than the gauge. I would sync the carbs and see how well the bike idles. Ed

As soon as I fire the bike it wants to pull the trans fluid from my nanometer up to #1 intake and gives me lots of air in the lines. Do I need restrictors in the lines?

I have done a little bit of vacuum measurement at work and everything seems to be measured in inches of water or inches of mercury... I've never heard of "inches of trans fluid" :S

Some home-made diy manometers use long clear hoses with ATF inside.
