I have a 1981 KZ1000 carburetor that I need to set the float bowls to proper height, does anybody know the proper height?

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Everyone says to set them by the clear tube test. Gas level should be 3mm +/- from mating surface of bowl

The correct way to set the fuel height is with the clear tube method. There are several threads with tutorials on this site and the procedure is described int the factory shop manual. If you want a free copy of the manual, pm me your email address and I'll send you a copy. The float height measurement is only to get things in the ballpark prior to doing the clear tube method.

+1 The clear tube method is the only accurate way to set fuel levels. Ed

Everyone has answered correctly, but missing your original questions answer. So check the service manual in my signature it will have the BS34 carbs in it. It will tell you both the Dry Height adjustment, as well as the Clear Tube test dimension.

Thanks Ed, my engine was racing at 6000 rpm when I started it, I took carbs boots off and found number two full of carbon deposits, looks like a vacuum leak, cleaned them all good, put gasket sealer on boots and re attached them all, float height vary from carb to carb using clear tube method, level are all different, not much, but different. How high should they go up?

Set float according to service manual 18.6 mm and gas overflows out of air intake, looked at another site and said dry float height to be set at 22.6 mm + or - 1 mm, I did that and still not getting gas to pistons, lowered float to 21.6 mm and still not firing, did clear tube test and looks to be just a tad below gasket level, put some wd-40 in pistons and she fired up with no pods on and started with a racing idle (5000 rpm), put pods on gave throtle and rpm went down to 1200 and when I gave it throthle again she wasnt responding well, rpm would not go past 4000, and finally she died. Now she doesnt start due to no fuel going to pistons, should I lower float even more, or raise it. Could there be another issue I am missing. Forgot to mention, sparkplugs were full of carbon and air/fuel screws turned to 2 1/2 turns.

Okay, so nobody can help me yet, however I was looking at the BS34mm rebiuld tutorial and saw in the pictures of a slide with the diaphgram at the bottom and jet needle at the top, that means jet needle is fastened in the slide, mine is just placed in there, if you turn slide upside down, the needle falls out. Question is, are the needles fastened to the slides in this carburetor, because if they are, I am missing the pieces to fasten the needle, and that means the previous owner was in here, and probably why I am having difficulties, also if I spray carb cleaner in from main jet where should the cleaner come out?.
