Air Filter Woes was created by The_Proletariat
Well I have a stupid question about my air filter.

1982 KZ550C3.

This is the exact filter I am trying to replace.

www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?i...2900&item=EM12-92900

The box is clearly marked KZ550C.

I cannot get the top piece of the air box, the piece with two slotted screws to fit properly with this filter in the airbox. The air filter seems too large in almost every dimension to fit properly in the airbox.

Is your bike a Canadian model? Kawasaki does have a different listing for the Canadian model, as to the US model. What the difference would be I don't know.
Does your old filter have a part # on it?

I am not sure. The speedometer is in mph. The old filter has been thrown away.

check to see if the airbox has ever been changed, I ran into the same problem on my 750 csr and ended up someone had put a different airbox in. I have no idea what it came out of but it was never quite right until i changed it back to original, hope it helps.

Ya the filter is placed towards the front of the airbox. #11012 will not fit properly with the filter in the airbox.

Assuming your airbox is the correct one for your bike, the genuine Kawasaki air filter is still available. If you contact Z1E and they can't help you may want to get one from the dealer.

Its been a few years since I had the 80 550, but seems like there was a piece in the bottom of the airbox which the filter goes down and in front of. This holds the filter forward so the foam seals. Maybe I'm wrong but I seem to remember it having to go down in front of a Tab or raised area to get it in there.

The airbox is the right one. It is stamped KZ550A,C.

Just surprised this Z1 filter will not fit.
