Maybe I should put this in the paint section, but here goes. My kz750
Was left exposed to the elements for a long time and the airbox has
Faded to a nasty grey color. I hit it with some shaker can gloss black
And now it really looks like shite. Any suggestions?

Replace it? You can probably use the airbox from just about any KZ750-4. Any differences are probably minor. Some have holes w grommets for the carburetor overflow tubing. Others have decorative covers on the sides.

What prep was done to the box pre-paint...?

Sounds as though all you did was throw some paint at her.... If so, as you have found out, that won't do... Start over with the proper prep and she'll come out as new....

* Sand the new paint down as much as possible and wipe clean.
* Auto parts store or even Wally World (Walmart) for Adhesion promoter.

* Black primer, preferably self adhesion primer.
Can accomplish plastic painting without primer but....
* Then color paint...

I've follower these simple guidelines on numerous plastic parts all with success... ;)

Thanks for the input guys. I'll start over again the right way. I've just been cleaning and de-rusting
little pieces while I wait for some other parts to get here and thought I'd make a try at the 'box.

Peanut Oil is what some people over on the GS Resources Forum were using with good results.

What I have always done with faded black plastic that is gray but does not have the chunky oxidation is use heat. You take a heat gun and you move it back and forth over the oxidation and watch it vanish. You have to be careful not to melt it though. It takes some practice but it is far more permanent than just oiling it or painting it.

I thought it was a dumb idea until I tried it.

Well, went through the cupboard and had no peanut oil, but did have
Peanut butter! No joke. In the interest of science, I took a gob and
Rubbed it in. Looks great! We'll see how it holds up.

Pics?

I rub WD40 in with steel wool and get okay results but never back to original.
