Kz 650 B1 1977 petcock problems was created by telecaster
Hi everybody, I need to replace many parts of my original petcock wich is a non-vacuum petcock on a kz 650 1977 B1. The previous owner had it covered with sillicone and the inside was trashed probably because he had screw it too hard. I am unable to find a rebuild kit as they seem to always be for vacuum petcock nor the parts I need such as the o-ring gasket and gas filter, they all seem to be backorder. Can I replace the original non-vacuum petcock by a vacuum one ? Does anyone have an idea where I could find replacement parts ? Do you think I can use this one particular petcock ? www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?item=KL18-4358

Thanks for you help, sorry for my english I am french canadian.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThe vacuum petcock will not work on your bike. It relies on vacuum from a port on the carbs to open and close it, but 1977 carbs don’t have that vacuum port. Just clean and rebuild your manual petcock; it’s very easy to do. As far as parts are concerned - in the diagram you see parts labeled:

11 - 51039-010 O-ring - This is still available from Kawasaki – any dealer or online parts house can get it.
12 - 51038-007 Strainer, fuel – obsolete but see eBay items below.
13 - 51037-010 Gasket Fuel Cock Cup – obsolete but see eBay items below.
14 - 670B2010 O-ring 10mm - This is still available from Kawasaki – any dealer or online parts house can get it.

You can do like Ed says if you can still buy those parts, but that manual petcock is one major piece of crap I must say. The lever will always eventually become hard to turn and if not addressed right away the lever will snap off, and the body/lever junction where the oring seals eventually wears and you have a wobbling lever and the oring will not seal an oval hole with a round lever. The gasket for the filter is rubber and will go bad every time you attempt to tighten the bowl to stop a leak or service the filter.
At least my own experience. I like staying original, Ed and me are good buddys that way. :P but you can add a vacuum petcock if you like. You can use any of the 4 intake rubber manifold sync ports for a source of vacuum with no ill effects. Some 77s the vacuum petcock will go right on, some the opening in the tank for the fuel pickup tubes is too small and a little filing will open the hole the required amount pretty easily. To me that manual petcock was the second thing to go, the points being first and foremost.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

All right, thanks Ed, Ron and Patton. Ron your suggestion seems very good but I went Ed's way As I have other things to deal with on the bike and I want to make it run properly stock before I attempt any modification.

Your suggestion helped me out a lot !

I wouldn't go to a vacuum unit, talk about a piece of crap, I put 77 Model manual on my 78 650SR back in 1980 and haven't had a bit of trouble since, Last summer my son bought a 78 650SR One of the first things I did was find a 1977 manual petcock on ebay also a rebuild kit and changed it out for him.
78 being the first year those vacuum models are worth trash only

Went with the Suzuki from z-1 and it seems to be working fine but I do like the idea of finding a 77 non vac one and rebuilding.

Have a second tank that needs the leaking 78 valve replaced so I think this is the way I'm going as a Pingle is a few bucks to high for me.
