Carb ID numbers was created by zedninehunner
Hi, I am a new member from over here in Scotland. you guys seem to have a lot of info and I was wondering if anybody can help me ID carbs I have.

The manifold just below the choke lever has 102 then 5A below it, they are VM26's with no air screw but with the fuel screw underside the float bowls, I think these are from a 77 or 78 KZ1000 ( Z1000 over here in the UK), but I am confused as I thought KZ1000's has 28mm carbs?? I have double checked the inlet with vernier calipers and they measure 26mm.

Any help would be greatfully recieved, thanks.

Hello, zedninehunner, and WELCOME to KZrider! :cheer:

Stock 1977 KZ1000-A1 and 1978 KZ1000-A2 carbs were 26mm with bottom-located pilot mixture adjustment screws.

Stock 1979 KZ1000-A3 carbs were 28mm with side-located pilot air adjustment screws.

Stock 1978 KZ1000-D1 and 1979 KZ1000-D2 cafe racer models had 28mm carbs with side-located pilot air adjustment screws.

Good Fortune! :)

Just as a point of reference, I have a 1978 Z1R Kz1000-D, the 1/4 fairing 'cafe racer' version of the '78 Kz1000 -- it has on its #4 rightmost carb intake flange '104 A' in 2 rows, and the carb intakes as measured are 28mm which as Patton said are the stock carbs.

The earlier Z1 models until the Kz900 (the 1973-75 Z1-900cc bike) did have 28mm carbs, but at least on U.S. bikes in 1976 the Kz900 had 26mm carbs and they carried that over to the 1977 Kz900 (yes they did make a U.S model Kz900 in 1977) and the 1977-78 Kz1000-A models. Not sure about the 76-78 LTD models, although I doubt the UK or Europe got the LTD version.

The KZ1000B series is similar to the A series. 1977/1978 KZ1000B1/B2 had Mikuni VM26SS carbs. Early model KZ1000B3 also had VM26SS but at some time in the model run, switched to VM28 carbs. 1980 KZ1000B4 had 28mm carbs.

Interesting info thanks for sharing it.

Yes the early Z1 bikes (72 thru 75) did have 28s but they are vm28sc carbs with external sync screws and a 2 screw top. The later carbs were vm26ss and vm28ss carbs that have internal sync screws and 3 screw tops.
