Good evening after many months its time to start the project again. I'm going to start adjusting and tuning my carbs. Key part is where to start.
Items to consider
78 kz1000b2(ltd)
Completed top end rebuilt
Engine bore out to 1015 with new rings and pistons broke in with about 1000km
Head rebuilt new springs, valve seats and valves lapped, slight polish
Valves adjusted to spec .005mm
All torqued to spec
Wiring harness cleaned and tested
Electrical system stator to coils all new and tested
Recent plugs and wires
Wired George coil mod
Dyna S ignition
Dyna green coils
4-1 exhaust
K&N Pods  yes pods
Carbs cleaned

My current carb settings
102 main and 15 pilot stock settings for all other items

I'm wondering where should I start with the jets? 102 is way too low for this setup as I've been reading 120 mains in a few posts. I had found a few years back a rule of thumb that you should go up a size each mod. True?

I broke the motor in with the air box with no signs of lean. Please no pod air box debate I'm adding them. I would just like a good starting point to rule out as much trial and error.

The bike ran ok but had a poor idle and flat spot around 7k rpm. It never as felt as wild as my friends KZ900.

Thanks this site has been a life saver so many times

I would start with 120 main and a 20 pilot (Mikuni jet sizes) and leave the needle on the stock 4th slot.

Assuming you have stock carbs @ VM26's...

Elevation and temps you live come into play as well... ;)

Granted, for Keihin CR's but theory/T-shoot still applies.

Maybe upgrade to a set of 28's before spending time and money setting up the 26's?

Thanks OMR that's exactly what I was referring to.

So with my setup
Main 102 +2 pods +2 4-1 + 1 for bore -1 = 4*2.5 = 112
Pilot 15 +1 *2.5 = 17

However according to the chart above I should be 105/15 not 102 thus 115 and 17

I'd like to upgrade to vm28 but not in the budget unless anyone has a line on a good cheap set :)
My time and jets are cheap ha!

Yes I have VM26 carbs. In digging around on Z1 all the jets are for VM28s are they compatible? EBAY min price on VM28 250+ rebuild costs.

When I got the bike I wonder why 102 would be in it jetted wrong? I paid a mechanic to rebuild them then and he kept the 102 in even though I bought 105 kits!! HA!

Funny thing is I put about 4k on it that way ha! It was only after the rebuild and electrical fixes I started having idle and low speed issues along with flat spots. Still pulls like a MOFO
