Seeking carb model and size advice
30 Jan 2013 20:26 - 31 Jan 2013 12:10
I've been considering making a carb upgrade, and need some help determining the best choice, correct model and size (flat slide, or round slide) Mikuni Smoothbores, for my bike. She's great now, but I want to make her better!
The bike: 1982 1100A...stock except V&H header, dyna 2000 w/mini-coils, electrex rotor, APE chain adj./ cyl studs and nuts, pod filters. Top end freshened over the past few years.

For a stock bike I wouldn't change the carbs. By the way your bike is beautiful.

Likely little gain, and a lot invested for it? Them carbs are kinda pricey.
Would you suggest installing a Dynojet kit? I have an extra set of vacuum slides from a police bike, which could be modified per the kit instructions. Each police slide cylinder has a restriction hole (in the side) to plug.

mikuni vm 33 smoothbores or rs36 would do the job, they also have the advantage of a 1/4 turn throttle response bringing the power on with less effort, your present k&n filter setup will fit right on both those carbs as well, cheers

@Turboking: Thanks man, but heard that already...dang-it! Just want to tink-her some more. I know she likes it, cause every touch makes her moan better.
I've been bringing her back from Vetter-ville since September, 2000.

IMO, a significant upgrade would be returning to the stock airbox.

Patton,
You may be right, but then I lose the storage area where the air-box was. I converted that space into a much-needed place to put stuff. But it is easily converted back.

Are you planning on head work (enlarged valves/P&P/.375 (+) lift camshafts etc...) otherwise, gain may be somewhat disappointing for you...
Now through in the mentioned items, oh yeah that will wake her up with some 29 -31 Keihins......
