83 KZ1000J fuel tap o-ring sizes
25 Jan 2013 22:16
Does anyone know the diameter and cross sectional size of an o-ring that would work on my bike. Id like to go to the o-ring supplier in town and avoid buying original. It is after all just an o ring. Viton maybe?
Thanks

Are you talking about the o-ring between the petcock and the fuel tank??

Yup. That's the one. I should say my petcock is the one that bolts on with 2 bolts

Do you have the old one to compare to?
Or maybe you could just take the petcock to auto parts store with you

I would just buy a genuine Kawasaki o-ring rather than spend time & $$ trying to find a substitute and maybe ending up with a leak. The o-ring that goes between the petcock and tank is still an "Active" part, so any dealer can get it for you or you can order it online. Ronayers.com lists it a $5.13. Ed

Thanks Ed and Wireman. Yes i could get an original kawasaki o-ring but a good quality properly sized o-ring from a reputable o-ring and oil seal supplier is just as good in my opinion. So i will run over there at lunch ang get one . Im sure no more than $1 . They are local and the Kawi dealer is not.Actually im kinda surprized that nobody out there has dimensions for one of these.

Considering that the "o-rings" are not round I am not surprised that no one has the dimensions. It would involve measuring the radius of each curved end and measuring the distance between the centers of those two radii. Not the easiest thing to do considering the thing is made of rubber. Even if someone did sort out the measurements finding an exact replacement outside Kawasaki will probably be a challenge that takes more than $4 in time and energy to overcome.

I used an o-ring from a Harbor Freight metric kit - 1981 KZ650-CSR - petcock bolt hole spacing = 34mm.
O-ring #P32: 31.7mm ID & 3.5mm cross section (31.7mm ~= 1.25")
A slightly larger o-ring would've probably worked. The next size up in the kit was too large (33.7mm ID).
I don't know if your o-ring is the same.
