Does separting carbs throw them out of sync? was created by Kitten Tooth
I had a mechanic tell me that separating the carburetor bodies on any bike will throw them out of sync with each other. I never separated another set of carbs since then and it sucks because i like to really clean the hell out of them whenever i have them off of a bike. I got to looking at the carbs on my 81' KZ1000LTD and was wondering why this would be true.. all the linkages for the butterflies just pop into each other through a spring loaded plate.. if the adjusting screws for syncing them arne't messed with when the carbs are apart why would things be any differen't apon re-assembly?
Thanks Guys,
KT

Yes, it can and probably will. The two throttle plates have to be synced mechanically so they are open the same amount at low throttle openings or low speed performance will be screwed up. That's done by physically changing the position of the throttles with respect to each other. Separating them disconnects that connection.

If they needed it, I would go ahead & separate 'em... may as well do the complete job & not have that nagging doubt in the back of the mind.

I agree, it is not like they cannot be synced again.

If you need to separate the carbs to get them clean then do it. It only takes a few minutes to sync the carbs. I have a Carbtune sync tool and use it at almost every oil change. If you are going to keep and ride almost any "older" motorcycle a Carbtune is a must have tool.
