What to clean carbs with?
25 Nov 2012 16:38
I found a set of 28's in my shop from a 75. I say found because I thought I sold them. Hope someone didn't get 26's that thought they were getting 28's!! I found a lot of good info in the archives but am looking for something too soak them in that is not to aggressive. I just want them to look a bit better cosmetically.
Also what is a good setting for needle and size of mains for pods and header?
Thanks
Wayne

1. Walmart....sells 1-gallon cans of Berrymans carb cleaner with dip basket....I like it.
2. Disassemble carbs and soak over night in cleaner....replace lid during process. Dont do in house.
3. remove and place parts in a bucket of hot soapy water and scrub parts....
4. rinse well with clean water and use compressed air to blow out passages and dry parts.
If you want a factory look on the exterior....soda blasting is the best way to get there. I would soda blast them after step 4 and then do step 3 and 4 over.

a lot of auto part stores have the Gunk version of Berrymans also . Around $25 tho. I've also had good luck with straight Pine Sol. Seems to get parts nice and shiny

Took it apart of course...
I must add that the vinegar method may not be suitable for cleaning old fuel varnish.
But did a great job on the carb bodies.

Others have used lemon juice, but one guy reported that it kinda corroded the parts.
PineSol is supposed to be non-corrosive & it is an oil solvent. I've used a hot water solution of it on a couple of fuel valves w good results.
The Berryman's usually available now is the California compliant formula... less toxic & not as effective as the original/professional blend. I have a can of the good stuff & used it on some carbs.

Others have reported successful results from boiling in plain water.
