so I deleted all the emissions stuff from my 1980 kz550. added pod filters to the end of the carbs and now the bike seems to be running lean. when I close the choke bout half way while riding the engine runs fine but has no power but when I'm cruising down the road about 55-65 with the choke open it's spurting back and forth as I ride. the bike ran fine before I put the pod filters on and runs fine now under alot of load but cruising it seems to be running lean. can anyone give me any insight?

Yes. It's running lean. :P
Either put your air box back on the bike, or get the proper jetting to run pod filters on your bike.
If you don't buy the proper jet kit with performance needles, you're going to have to jet up to get some fuel flowing.
I'd say up 2 sizes on the pilots, maybe more. 2-6 on the mains. May even need to raise the needles. Probably will have to shim the needles with small washers if yours don't have grooves to adjust them with.
Is that your bike in the avatar? KZ550C LTD?

well I destroyed the boots from the carb to the box and they are pricey if you can find them. so putting back the old air box is out of the question. can't believe I actually got that thing out without cutting it out. but anyways. yes that is my bike 1980 kz550 ltd. I have no idea where to start with resetting the carbs. I have never touched the inside of a carberator. so of I'm gonna put bigger jets in should I change the pipe while I'm at it?

Are you asking if you need to put a pipe(exhaust system) on the bike? Sure, do what you want.
I just went through the carbs on my '82 550 LTD today. I'll post a picture of the jets you will be changing.
I can't for the life of me remember the size pilot jets that are in it. The mains are #92s.

The main jet is the large hex head jet in the center of the carb. The pilot jet is the small round jet to the left of the main.

thanks alot! those don't look terrible to remove and reinstall bigger ones. when you take the carbs off do you take them all the way off of the throttle cable too?

If you plan on keeping the pods, you will most likely have to drill your pilots out to get it to run right.
Lots of good info on your carbs on loudhvx sig line link to "550 TK-22 carbs"
I tried to post it in this message but it didn't work. Sorry.

Read it! More than once....
