new member needing help
04 Sep 2012 05:19 - 04 Sep 2012 08:26
Hi everyone. I am new, also new to riding. I've always loved older motorcycles especially cafe bikes.
I just bought my first bike. It is a 1978 KZ650. The bike is pretty clean but sat for awhile and the floats are sticking and gas just pours out of the bowls. So I know I have to clean the carbs. Here is my issue...the guy i bought the bike from also gave me an extra set of carbs. I'm not sure which set to use because one set has an idle adjuster screw? at the top of the carbs, while the other set has this at the bottom. Is one set better than the other?
Also while I have both sets apart for cleaning and inspection the bike has air-filter pods and a 4into1 pipe...What size jets should be in there?
Thank you for reading and I would greatly appreciate any help.

The correct carbs should look very much like these (idle knob is on top, see red circle). Ed

I think both of those are VM26 carburetors. I would rebuild both & sell one set.

One set has accelerator pump one does not.
I am rebuilding the set that was on the bike when I bought it. One of the needles (5cn8) is bent so I'm robbing needles off another set of carbs.
Here's my issue, the needles from the other set are 5cL16 needles. They measure the same. Hope it runs well!
