Fuel Filters and Fuel Lines was created by ottothecow
I've got a 1979 KZ400 that all of the sudden started stumbling at about 4-5k RPM under load (seems to rev fine with the clutch in or when already going in first gear but when I have to open the throttle wide to get it up there in higher gears, it stumbles). I am thinking I got something stuck in one of the jets so I need to pull the carbs and clean them again.

I figure while I do this, it is time to add a fuel filter and some clear fuel line.

Can anyone tell me what kind of filter and what size fuel line/how much length I need? Bonus points if they are on a website that will also sell me new air and oil filters (since I can't find them locally).

Thanks!

Don't use any type of clear/translucent fuel line. Even urethane will turn hard and/or dissolve within 6 months. Vinyl might work for 6 days.

Use only black rubber fuel line. Two feet should do it. 1/4" line.

Don't use paper fuel filters. Use scintered brass/bronze, or metal screen type filters. The paper ones seal up after a while and make you feel like it is running out of gas. 1/4"

If you can get the stuff at Z1 enterprises, they might have the air/oil filters too.

They've got the oil filters, but no air that I can see...oh well.

Which of these is the right fuel filter?

They are the only 1/4" filters they sell but they don't say anything about the filter material.

I order my filter there, it seems to be either metal or stone media, they might have the filter if you call.

They are all good.
The first one is a metal screen. That's the one I like.
The other two are scintered brass/bronze.

Ethanol In Gasoline Problems (E-10, E-15, E-20, E-30, & E-85)

Certain materials commonly used with gasoline may be incompatible with high-level ethanol blends, causing them to degrade and contaminate the fuel. Metals that have been shown to degrade over time in the presence of high-level alcohol blends include brass,(floats & jets) lead, zinc(carb bodies) and lead-based solder.

Nonmetallic materials that degrade when in contact with ethanol include natural rubber, polyurethane, cork gasket material, leather, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polyamides, and certain thermoplastic or thermoset polymers.

The Ethanol in the gas has been reported to attack the glue used in gas filters, rendering them useless, as the paper filter medium is now coated with glue. It also softened the filter hose connection ends, causing possible failure, it may also attack the body of the filter, softening it.

I have used the clear hoses for some time. The higher quality has worked well for me with some being over 5 to 6 years. Rubber fuel lines have caused me some minoe issues when they became flacky iiside. They were very old though. Have had some clear types that became brittle first use.

I thought the blue urethane was ok, but after about 6 months we opened my buddy's carbs and the bowls were totally blue inside.

I think it may depend how much alcohol is in the gas, and temperature etc.
