So I bought a set of K&N POD Filters for my 1980 KZ550 thinking I could just put them on. After further inspection looks like these things may be a chore to put on. There is a Crank breather tube that runs from the engine case to the air box. I know I will need to put a small clamp on filter on that. I guess on this model KZ in 1980 there is an emissions valve that burns the unburned gas and basically recirculates it to the exhaust side. Basically my question is how can I delete this emissions control system? Also is there anything great about leaving it on or taking it off? I want to know what everyone else does because I know this is not the first time someone has wanted to install these filters. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ;)

I can only reply to what I've had on my 1980 750e for twenty years. I go the bike equipped
with K&N pods and it's run fine for me. Simply remove the emission junk and install the pods on the
Carbs and use a bit of hose to install the filter on the crankcase. just be sure to clean them as your suppose to. Many folks say you would have to change your jets. I never did and ran a 4 into one along with the pods on stock jets. May not be the thing you might want to do but just letting you know it can be done and not kill a motor.

Your gas recirculation reeds are located on top of your valve cover on the fronts. I'd remove the exhaust recirculation valve that those reed hoses feed to and plug its vaccuum line going to it. Then take a piece of hose or pipe and connect the 2 short hoses together coming from the reed plates. Easiest quickest way.
The hose on the bottom of the air box from the engine is a crankcase breather which was run into the airbox to burn any unburnt fuel vapors from the crankcase. The hose at top of airbox went to the exhaust recirculation reeds and valve. Plug the top hole in the airbox and simply put the breather filter on the hose from the crankcase. All should be good and eliminate that hollow airbox sound from the ERV Exhaust recirculation valve.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.

what do I do with the lines that are going/coming from the carbs to the recirc valve?

Plug or cap them off, as they can be acting like a vacuum leak if left open. Most auto parts stores sell a selection of rubber caps used for car emission testing.

awesome replies and thank you. got everything capped off an the new filters installed. took the bike out and seems like it running lean now. not sure why but it spurts while riding. runs fine as long as you keep the choke closed about 3/4 of the way. any suggestions other than re-jetting the carbs?
