Carb removal/install trick
11 May 2012 17:54
Methinks there has to be some tricks of the trade or easier ways to pull off a set of carbs or reinstall??!!
Was sure I was going to tear my boots (air side) to pieces no matter how careful I was trying to be.
Anyone have some tips for making this easier/smoother?
I want to take mine off again and do some work and am dreading the fight to get em in out.
tks in advance....

Pliable air ducts are the real trick. When they get old and hard (like some of the KZRider members) they are nearly impossible to deal with and should be replaced. When they are soft and pliable some folks roll them back on themselves and some folks push them backwards into the airbox. Ed

Take the bolts out of the battery box, put the cable & fuel lines on before you stick the carbs all the way in place, the rest is a fight, a curved hook type radiator hose tool helps to get the boots on. Put the hook under the boots and slide the tool around to get them back on the carbs. You could try warming the boots with a hair dryer but the newer they are the better. You'll think the carbs wont go back in the boots but they will, a little silicone grease helps. Ive literally done dozens of sets and its always a battle on Kawasakis or Suzukis, never owned a Honda 4 but I cant imagine them being any easier

remove bolts from battery box, then loosen the bolts for the air breather and pry air breather as far as it will move back. then loosen the carb clamps and wiggle the carbs up and back. i spray WD40 on the inside edges of carb intakes and the carbs will slide right back in.

Heat them up. Heat fan or hair dryer
I fold them when hot And pop them in between carb and air box when I let go the open up and fit right on
For me this works perfect

I don't know what planet you're from, Ed, but here on Earth our Kzr members don't get harder with age. Quite the contrary, they get too soft to utilize properly.

Thanks everyone for hints/help and humour.
My airbox won't slide back far cuz of it's width and it stops against frame so just rubbed some silicone lube on boots/holders and wrestled them off and on.
Good news was the gasket sealer worked and engine ran amazing, barely even needed choke anymore from cold start. bad news was by end of a ride they seemed to be leaking again as idle degraded again and sound was not as sharp. So yeah, you were right, sealant isn't a fix after all.
Looks like I will be ordering yet even more parts for this bitch and getting new carb holders from Z1.
I should really put this bike in my will soon, cuz if wife finds out what I have spent on it over last 12 months I am dead. Love it but replacing every piece of bike is getting a bit out of hand.
Guess every hobby has it's costs, as long as it puts a smile on your face at end of day it's worth it eh. ( what I keep telling myself anyways).
ride on
