Kz750 twin only revs to around 3000 rpm was created by gumby prichard
So im guessing it's carb issues, but i bought a kz750 twin thinking it would be similar to my kz400 that i tracked, but with the dohc it's completely different. I got it started, but it will only idle for a second and wont start without giving it gas. Also it only revs to about 3000 or 4000 rpms. First thing i did was clean the carbs. Everything seems to be clear. I have cv carbs on it and what's weird is when i cleaned them I could not find the jets for the life of me! are they down in the holes on this model? They are mikuni carbs. I know on my kz400 keihin carbs the jets are right on top. Confusing.

Also, i know this is the carb thread, but can anyone give tips on checking the valve clearence on this thing? It had no rocker arms! It looks as though the cam shaft directly hits the valves. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance guys. -derek-

should be in the bottom of the carbs. u can use a thin wire to poke around and get the gunk out. did you check for leaks and cracks in the intake boots?

and yes the dohc's lobes press down on the valves, no rockers.

Valve clearance is .002" - .004", but up to .006" is OK.

Both main and pilot jets are in the bowls. Stock jets are 125 main and 45 pilot.

well when i cleaned my carbs i made sure every port i sprayed ended up coming out of a different hole to be sure they were clear. BUT i had an idea! upon helping my friend with his cl200 scrambler we came to the conclusion that his plug wires were corroded on the inside of the rubber. therefor causing the spark plugs to go in and out. I checked my plug wires and found a similar problem. I will check my theory tomorrow, but does anyone else second this? or has anyone had a similar problem?

actually...i just remembered i need to buy a petcock rebuild kit and clean my tank...its infested with rust...:[[[[ any cheaper solution besides naval jelly and/or behr concrete etcher???

UPDATE

ok guys here's everything i did, recleaned carbs, took jets out this time, (also BE SURE YOU PUT FLOAT BOWL GASKETS ON CORRECTLY, the gaskets have holes that correspond with the jets, since they are in the bowl, if gaskets are on incorrectly it will restrict gas flow through the jets) also, i cleaned petcock, installed new petcock rebuild kit, cleaned tank with behr concrete etcher(the best i could), also snipped the plug wires shorter because there was dry rot and it didnt look likethe boots was making good connection with the plug wires. also replaced condensor and adjusted the point! fires up great! i think im still having a little timing issue because it doesnt idle like a cv carb normally does. sounds almost like a harley idles, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be since its a large twin........

any imput will be appreciated. pictures will be posted soon!
