Noob needs help changing fuel filter on 1982 KZ305

Hey guys,

I have been looking at a service manual I have found online to try to and follow instructions, but the picture does not look like the fuel petcock on my bike.

Instead, the tube comes out of the back, and I see no cap to unscrew. Is the fuel filter inside the hose or petcock?

you should have a filter in the tank take the 2 10mm screws out of the petcock where it attaches to the tank slitghty wiggle it out there is a stem that goes up in the tank thats where the filter is. I recommend cleaning it and intalling an inline filter

Hello, BukkakePizza, and WELCOME to KZr! :cheer:

Including information about bike year and model is helpful to viewers and usually elicits better responses.
It's easy to put the information in your signature where it shows in all posted messages, past and future.
And may be changed whenever and as often as desired.

Done! Sorry bout that.

Anyways I suppose I forgot to introduce myself.

This is the first street motorcycle I have ever owned (had a dirtbike 16 years ago when I was a kid).

I figure this would be a good bike to learn on, and in meantime take good care of it and pass it on to someone else to use it for same or restore.

Here are pics of my bike (got it on craigslist for $650)

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc.

For example, here's a diagram of the 1982 KZ305 CSR (Belt) fuel tank and petcock.

And here's a link for help with navigating the kawasaki.com site and finding information.

Yeah, it only starts after cranking it for a very long time. Once it starts it runs fine (other than needing the idle adjusted). Before i got it to start it just acted like it is about to roar up but just puts a few times and dies. I ran the battery down doing that.

I think it is having trouble getting fuel to it. Previous owner said it sat over winter and this happened afterwards. (ran fine beforehand)

I have had similar petcocks off and they are pretty easy to pull apart and clean. sitting is hard on on a bike

Be sure when you try to start the engine (when the engine is cool) to put the choke all the way on and do not touch the throttle. When the engine is warmed up; no choke and no throttle. Otherwise starting will be difficult. Ed

Ok, as all the folks here will tell you. The three most lied words in the craigslist world are "ran. fine. beforehand."...or the long version, "it ran great before I put it away"

It may or may not be the filter. Fuel sludge in the bowls- gas evaporated, you add gas, dilutes that crap (gas..solvent, eh?) and now..
Pull the tank, dump that gas- save it put it in your car. inspect the tank, cleaning kits etc, put back on. You might get lucky with a can of seafoam in half a tank of gas.
Change the oil TODAY.
I see the plug wire is off and the plug is missing?? Is that right? Amsoil makes a cleaner foam that does work extremely well. Fill those cylinders up, let soak for a day, then turn motor over..but do put a large rag over those holes before you spin it. THEN change the oil. I hate seeing plugs left out of anything
Do an inspection- all fluids, and I mean all. Today. (if you haven't flushed each and every thing out of the bike, please do it now) My first bike, after decades absence, I bought, got it running and four or five days later it died- but not until the front brake locked up- that dot3 fluid sitting for 4 years turned to sludge.
older bikes are all about zen, and that art..of maintaining them.
And buy a can of electrical contact cleaner. while you have the tank off, pull apart all those electrical connectors one..at..a..time and hose them out with the contact cleaner. Clean the battery connections, check the fluid if its not sealed.
I get worried when I read someone buys a used bike, be it first one, or after a long absence, gets it fired up and just takes off joy riding.
Did I read 650? Great deal- It looks pretty clean, and you got it running? For 650? Not bad, not bad at all.
And your name and avatar make it difficult to revisit this thread.

I had taken a plug out when I bought it to do a compression test
