Removing Air Box To Replace With Pods...

Hello, Everyone. I am in the process of doing a few modifications on my bike after I realized that I liked it enough to not try and sell it. It's a 1983 KZ750 LTD shaft drive. I've had it for 2 years and have had enough little problems with it. After replacing the battery and having the starter rebuilt, I'm left with some other problems. When I would start it up, I would have to play with the choke tremendously, and after all of that, and it was warmed up, I still had to leave the choke up a little to keep it running decent. Every once in awhile, even after I thought it was running fine, I would have to reach down and play with the choke some more. With my frustrations mounting, I got bored and decided to start taking things off and learning a little about my bike with some extra free time I had. I removed; the seat, tank, battery, carbs, and air box. I had the idea of removing the air box altogether, and replacing it with 4 air filter pods. I think it would look a lot better, but I also realize that I'll have to have the carbs worked on to fit the new intake system. My problem lies in what to do with the open ports left when I remove the air box. There are a couple hoses that are hooked up to the air box, and I believe they are some sort of overflow hoses (one on top of the crankcase, and another one/two on top of the heads). What do I place in, on, or whatever after I were to make this switch. A buddy mentioned something about Breather Vents, but I don't know what, or where to find those. Should I just put my air box back on, and forget this whole idea? Any help would be much appreciated. Sorry for the long story.

Welcome to the forum.

You can search "Pods" and find all the info you need to make a decision on the conversion.

This is probably the most discussed topic on the site.

Please, put some spaces between sentences for us old farts. Roy

I thought about getting pods too, but I heard by many in the know that with CV carbs, it is a pain in the arse to adjust those carbs with pods. So I stayed with the airbox until I get new carbs.

As far as the tubes, I believe the tube to the breather just below the airbox can be left open, otherwise I have seen some with breather filters that can fit in place of the hose.

The top hoses I think you are referring to go to the reed valve covers on the top of engine. You can get rid of the entire vacuum system and block the holes leading into the reed valves (or get rid of the reed valve covers altogether and replace with block-off plates like those at APE parts).

Thanks, guys. I'm going to use all of this input in these next couple days. I noticed some rust on the inside of my tank, leading me to research a good sealant to fix that problem. I also picked up some spark plugs this afternoon for the heck of it. I'm going to clean my air box and contemplate putting it back on, although I have already purchased the pods. I have a feeling that getting my Carbs 'jetted' for the new filters will be pretty expensive, and a task I'm not sure I'm capable of completing correctly myself.. My old air filter was a form cylinder shaped one. It was pretty damn haggard, to say the least.

When I rebuilt my 1000 I decided that I just had to have pods. I mean they look cool and it's so much easier to remove the carbs with the airbox gone. I never could get it to stop surging while cruising down the highway. I swapped jets, changed needle clips positions, adjusted air screws, and cussed at the moon. Nothing helped. I finally gave up and put the airbox back on. Runs like a dream now!

I know there are people that have had success with pods. More power to them. I couldn't do it. If you are not experienced with carbs, then I suggest you keep the airbox.
