Need a pic of throttle cables attached to carbs z1

23 Mar 2012 21:03

I am at a loss on what is going on with my pull and push throttle cables. I know PO said he swapped in a set of carbs recently but me thinks the bracket that holds the cables at the carb assembly is not kosher for this bike. Here's what I have now. Don't laugh or give me grief about my zip tie fix...

I would like to know what 'normal' linkage should look like so I can get the parts I need to make this right.

I do not have a pic to show you.

Not sure from your pic but it looks like you have a set of BS carbs on your Z1. If that is the case the BS carbs use a single cable - not the 2 cables used by the stock vm carbs on the z1. The single cable for the BS carbs has a smaller end to fit into the cup at the carb bracket.

No, I moved the tubes for the picture.

I did some searching and it seems I have BS34 carbs.

So, what cable would I need to put on there for it to be the correct one for the carbs? The carb assembly is set up to use two cables. I don't know if that is technically called pull/pull or pull/push but I am guessing the handlebar end of all the cables would still fit the stock throttle grip. It would be nice for them to bolt up to the carbs in a proper way.

I think I'll snap some photos all over and post them on here so I can find out what is stock and what has been changed on this monster. I was on the gallery looking at pictures of kz's and I discovered my swing arm is not original with a 4" stretch like PO said.

I don't want to sound like I'm clueless, I just never owned a kz or was ever around one enough to be familiar with them. So I have no reference for stock setups, except for you folks.

Thanks.

I put BS34 carbs on my 77. Same thing as you have. I simply removed the "push" cable (the one towards the back.) You shouldn't need the zip ties. The cable sheath end just sits in the holder. Once you set up the cable length and tension, the closure spring on the carb linkage will hold everything in place.
Removing the "push" cable from the throttle housing on the handlebars will give you a chance to inspect the cable end on the "pull" cable. When I did mine I found my "pull" cable end was on its last strand and about to break. Also, my throttle was in bad need of cleaning and lubrication. Use a little chain lube between the grip and the handlebar and also on the cable end, it works wonders.
I can send you pics tomorrow as well.

Mine also has the bracket for what looks like a push/pull cable setup but there is no cable I've found that will fit that "push" bracket. It's way too far from the linkage, I see the zip tie is trying to compensate for that on yours. Maybe it's some special Police requirement? I dunno. BS34's don't really need a push cable.
Those two nuts on the pull cable, when you finish setting the length and tension, you should have one nut under the bracket and one on top. There is an adjustment at the throttle on the handlebar as well to get the length correct. If you can't get the length to accommodate the over/under nut placement, no worries, just set the cable up with both nuts on the top of the bracket and use the upper nut as a jam nut against the lower nut to keep it from loosening up. Like I said before, the closure spring will hold everything nice and tight against the bracket.

Wow! Thanks for the pics and all the help!

I was thinking, too that the whole thing didn't really need a push cable. When I removed the carbs I noticed there are four return springs built onto the butterfly shaft between carbs. I also noticed two of the four were not installed to have any tension on them. SO I fixed those ends so all four were pulling the butterflies closed and that alone made it much more snappy going closed. I failed to mention that the last time I ran the engine, it didn't want to go back to idle as fast as it should without reaching down and manually pushing on the linkage.

Diamond, my push cable is just like you said, way too far from the linkage to be mounted in the bracket. Right now the cable housing end is actually under the bracket where it is supposed to be mounted, thus the zip tie.

If I drill the pull mount big enough for the threaded portion of the pull cable to be'nutted' in place above and below the mount, the cable will be too long. It has to stay right about where the pic shows now.

Nobody, great pic. That is what I want to accomplish. What is your year/model? And is that all stock?

I haven't started the bike since changing it to the way it is in the picture. I'm sureit is better than before. But zip ties do not a permanent cure make. :)

I finally got a chance to redo the throttle linkage. I removed the push cable altogether. Then I did some cutting and welding on the cable holding bracket. Here's what I came up with...

Before...

After...
