Throttle cable adjustment was created by Topper
I can't seem to get my throttle cables adjusted quite the way I want them and the procedure in the manual isn't helping.

This is for my '79 KZ750 which has both a pull and push cable.

The throttle isn't really snapping back as fast as I'd like and I end up with some high revving when shifting (and/or really have to slow down my shifting).

I've tried to follow the procedure in the manual but it doesn't help much. And the push cable seems sort of counter intuitive. I would think that you'd want that fairly tight to get it to snap back, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Any advice?

Permanent and perpetual noob.

I start with slack in both cables, make sure the Throttle linkage on the carbs is snapping shut, spring in place etc. Then bring up the tension on the Pull cable, leaving a bit of slack. Then work with the Push cable, you only need to get it to the point of taking out the excess slack. It should be pretty simple, you may want to clean and lube the Throttle tube wear it goes on the bars, then using a Cable oilier, squirt some lube in both cables. Or you can hang them with a plastic bag shaped like a funnel and let gravity lube them. Harbor Freight and the bike shops sell the cable oilier.
Well I know I've seen it down at our HF but I can't find it on their web site.

As stated, be sure the cables are lubed (motor oil works), and that the throttle tube at the grip is lubed (white lithium works), and that the cables are adjusted according to the manual (the push cable really should have a little slack). If still slow to return, I would unhook both cables at the carb and make sure the carb spring is snapping the carbs closed with no hangup. If that's good, then with the cables still unhooked, turn the throttle to make sure the cables are moving smoothly. If they are not, and if everything is lubed you may want to remove the fuel tank and make sure the cables are routed correctly so there are no sharp bends. If none of that works, you may have a frayed cable that needs to be replaced. Ed

I had a similar issue a while back. I replaced both throttle cables, had problems returning to idle, and engine would start revving when you turn the handlebars to the left. Put the original cables back on, problem went away.

Long story short, check to see if the length is correct and or binding up somewhere.
