Vacuum Leak
24 Nov 2011 19:48
So I just replaced a leaking carb boot with a brand new boot made for my model bike and i just checked it with the starter fluid test to see if the idle changed and it did. I don't know why it would not be air tight with a brand new boot on there. Is it normal for there to be a small change in the idle when that test is ran?

Are the clamps (that hold the carbs in the holders) correctly positioned, and sufficiently tightened?
Stock holders and stock carbs, so the holders are the correct size and not too large for the particular carbs being fitted?
If starter fluid is being ingested from the outside, then air is also being ingested from the outside (meaning an unwanted air leak).
There should be no need to apply any sealant of any kind, either between the holder and engine head, or where the carb fits into the holder.
It's okay to spray some WD40 or smear a little silicone lube (not sealant) or Armoral inside the holder before pushing the carb into the holder.
With the lube, the carbs are more easily fitted into the holders.
Good Fortune!
