KZ carbs on a ZX was created by RobK
Hey Y'all,
Haven't posted in a while because I've been messing with a couple of Yamaha XTs, but working on a new project and I have a (potentially stupid) question.
I recently picked up a '90 ZX7 that has freshly rebuilt '87 GPX (ZX) 750 motor.
The heads on the two bikes are at a different angle (the ZX leans more forward), so as a result there is much less space for the airbox and neither stocker will fit.
These carbs being CVs mean that pods probably aren't ideal. So my next thought is to go with flatsides so I could with pods. Good idea, but my wallet isn't up for the task for $500+ for a set of used Mikunis off Fleabay.
Then I started wondering about the two banks of carbs that I have for the ZX900 project, one set of 26mm Mikunis (the stock units) and another set that came with the bike, a set of 28s that likely came from a kz650 or 750.
I have to admit, my knowledge of carbs is fledgling, so I'm not sure how stupid this idea is. There is clearly a difference in manifold size which could be an issue, but how much I don't know. Is this a deal killer?
Any other reason why I can't put the carbs from the KZ on the ZX, (other than spacing)?
A note here, the ZX will get a full treatment later on I'm just looking to build up a daily rider so I can get back to the KZ. Optimal performance can be worked on later, I'm just looking for something that will go fast enough to keep life interesting.
Any body wanna chime in and let me know if this is a half-baked scheme?
Thanks.
RK

i can go dig em out if you want
let me know

Aren't zx600 carbs also CVs?
Did you mean that the float bowls need to be level?
Here's a pic of the current set up, the carbs are pretty close to vertical, (especially as the rear wheel is about 3-4 inches off the deck).

Look at the carbs on the bike behind it, they are not tilted as bad but still have slanted bowls on them.

Yeah - I've just had some time to get into the bike a bit, and having seen how out the spacing really is and the condition of the 28s, I'm gonna look at another solution.
I'm gonna do a little more research on alternatives to CV (flat and round slide I'm presuming) and there's always the possibility of making an airbox out of fiberglass.
Thanks much all for the feedback.
