Need new carb diaphragms--Which ones? was created by ottothecow
I pulled my carbs out of my 79 kz400 for the first time for cleaning and it looks like I need new diaphragms...one has a few holes and the other one has a large tear.

It looks like I have 3 options (other than finding a NOS pair somewhere), but I was hoping someone could tell me which is the preferred method:

- JBM Industries - requires cutting off both rings but is affordable and looks like I could have it before the weekend if I order now (which would be nice).
- German Maker Discussed on the armbell -more expensive and will require slow shipping. Only cuts off the top plastic ring and glues to the second.
- Motoallparts on ebay -Would ship fast and probably not cost a ton but it doesn't have the tab for orientation and I would be worried about tearing them during installation since they don't cut either of the rings.

My intuition suggests going with the JBM ones...affordable and seem to work (and don't involve glue or trying to wedge something back between the new rings) but I know that once I clip both rings, I won't be able to use either of the other options so I need to be sure that these are a good product.

This place also replaces diaphragms:

I have never tried them, I just bought a good used set from a bike dismantler

Ok, I ordered from JBM--they got back to me with an invoice lightning fast and it looks like the package is already in the mailbox.

Hopefully these do the trick and I will be able to push the bike past 60-65mph.

Hope they work out for you, and are not to Heavy/ thick. That could cause lean hesitation, being slower to open. Post up your results once you get it back together. ;)

I'll report back with what I can...but since I have only owned a motorcycle since july (and spent 6 weeks of that out with a broken hand), I might not have much to say on the matter.

I imagine they have been torn the whole time I owned it, so it will probably be a vast improvement.

Any reassembly tips? Should I be greasing all of the threads on the jets and stuff before I put them back together? Spray everything down with WD-40? My clymer's manual is not very clear...it has the instructions for disassembly but then just says "clean and service as described in this chapter" but there is no procedure listed anywhere in the chapter that I can see.

Don't use WD-40 for anything, it's crap. You don't need to grease jet threads but you do need a screwdriver that fits the slot or it will tear it up.

I got the JBM diaphragms.

They look a little different than stock but they fit fine. The rubber seems a little bit stiffer than the original ones...but I think the original ones were pretty worn out and floppy so this may be how a new set is supposed to feel.

I've got one carb back together, I'll do the other one tonight and test them out tomorrow. Hopefully I can just reassemble the carbs, attach to the bike, and start her up.

Edit:
Is there anything wrong with using some stainless hose clamps to hold the airbox-to-carb boots in place? The stock clamps weren't in good shape and the hose clamp seems like the perfect replacement.
