Granted on a Suzuki but still applies to Kawis....
In helping one our new members with a 2001 KZ1000-Police we have several issues to contend with...
So on to researching & learning what we'll be facing regarding these beauties... Everyones beloved BS-34 carbs...
One of the best write ups Ive seen for rebuilding these carbs...
BS-34 CV Carb Re-build & Tuning
I've also placed in the KZR filebase...

I was expecting to see a set of BS-34s smashed in a 50 ton press.
That PDF looks like it came from BassCliff's website. He's compiled loads of information for those who are interested in the Suzuki GS bikes.

Its not my bike nor carbs so I have to be nice... Don't I or do I... :S
Anyhoot, out here very rarely do I see a KZ900/1000 any longer, police specials are about it for now... Plus this is a J motor with factory EI so learning something new won't hurt me... I think anyways.... :S :pinch:
We'll have a considerable amount of things to accomplish first on his bike... Nasty head gasket oil leak.... Compression and Leak down test... Valve adjustment to find where his clearances are...
If valve rebuild required, new gasket... Same time, recommending a new single head gasket anyways just due to oil leakage... Accomplish same time as valve clearance measurements/adjustments....
So onto timing checks/adjustments if required then onto these BS-34s.... DOH!!!!
He's keeping her completely stock so should be ok once cleaned, adjusted and sync'd....
I'll get him to start a project post....

Dear OMR,
Lot of BS36 pics (similar)...but different than 34's. The float height measurement is 18.6mm for my 34's, per Kaw manual.
Extremely helpful information, especially regarding the tiny pilot air jets in them little air inlet holes. I've merely tried spraying cheap carb cleaner in those passages, and probably ain't quite getting the crap out.
Have you (personally) removed those tiny jets before, and do they usually come out easy? There are no replacements for those in my BS34 K&L Carb kit. Do you know where I can get them in event of damage during removal?

My 76 KZ900 came with VM26mm carbs and considering what I was building in mild performance, they wouldnt do and after researching BS-34s, for the addiotional coin, I went with the Keihin 29mm CR'.
So this will be my first whack at BS-34's. Rich has ordered the service manaul so will keep to specs for this tutorial was for Suzuki GS series bikes, may be a tad different.
As mentioned, he's keeping his P21 police special stock so float height adjustments, screw adjustments and sync will be to spec. Based on how this bike starts and runs, truly neeeds the carbs sync'd no doubt...
Total carb rebuild most likely later due to this being hid daily driver (work transportation).
Will known more next weekend for this is where we will be going in head first... Compression and leakdown test first, then valve clearances, then carbs just to get her where she'll start and run better... Then we'll known where we stand and what he's looking at in $$$ to ideally rebuild.
The goal of next weekend is to find out where he stands in the head/valves/piston rings and at least get the bike runing better for the time being...
