i have a 79 kz750 twin. right now i have 45 pilot jet in there. i read that a size 50 will be better for starting and running in general. is this the right type of jet that i need?

The correct jet type is BS30/96. I am not sure why the ones shown have a "K" in front of the number. I used to have a bunch of sources for them listed in my browser favorites and they all died when my last computer blew up. Z1 can get them. Here is one source:

What I am finding is that most bikes of the early 80's era respond excellent to one size richer than stock. This is especially true if you will be riding in colder temps below 60F . Here is an awesome website that identifies and purchase all Mikuni and Kehin jets .
