These carbs are killing me! was created by matt650csr
I've been ever so slowly taking apart the carbs on my '81 650 csr and it is driving me crazy! I say slowly because every time I go at it I find some new screw that would rather have its head stripped than come loose no matter how much pb blaster I spray on it. I got them reasonably disassembled and set them to boiling in lemon juice and it took a lot off and loosened a few things but there are still a few stubborn SOB's left. I can't get the throttle valve (or jet needle since they are together) to come out. I am just thoroughly annoyed with this! Anyone have any ideas? And does anyone live in Minnesota and have an ultrasonic I could use!? ;)

Matt, you need to get a JIS screwdriver. Those screws look like phillips head screws, but the standard is different for JIS cross head screws. Standard phillips screwdrivers are good for stripping JIS heads.

That just answered a million questions I had about why so many of these screws were doing that! Where can I find one?

These are supposed to be pretty good: www.ikaswebshop.com/hojisscset4d.html I have no experience with them myself.

Actually, it is said that you can grind a little bit off the tip of a phillips so that it seats fully down into the JIS screw. This will help quite a bit if you are in a pinch. I would just grind the tip a small amount at a time until you can see that the screwdriver is fully seated in the screw. I doubt that you will be able to find a JIS at your local home improvement store. Reportedly, electronics stores sell JIS drivers in smaller sizes, as a lot of electronics take small JIS screws.

If you're not interested in saving the screws (or maybe you would anyway), you can use a dremel with a cutoff disc, and just slot the star to accept a flat scredriver, then no more stripping. Only takes a couple seconds to do every tough screw with the dremel, and removing them with a flathead is a pice o' cake.

Good luck.

First: I need a dremel lol

I think I will take the "grind the phillips screwdriver down a bit" approach.

Which leads to another question... Is there any other way than drilling out screws with heads fairly rounded out?
I can't wait to put these bastards back together and be done with them. Here's hoping I do it right and they work once I get to that point!

Matt, you gotta read other postings that pop up. ;) I've posted this at leat 2 or 3 times before. Take a look about halfway down the following thread. Ed

I try my best to read ones but naturally I jump to ones I can currently relate to and "loud clank while cranking" isn't relatable for me yet! I wish mine was at least cranking! lol!

And perhaps a better penetrating oil. Someone posted a penetrant comparison. Of the products you can buy Kroil was the best. Then Liquid Wrench. After that PB Blaster. wd40 was the worst. I've never seen Kroil anywhere, but the LW is readily available & cheap. Or go ahead & use the ATF-Acetone concoction.

Better than WD-40

Kroil can be ordered direct from Kano Labs; and you're right, it really works! Ed

Once you get them all out , you might consider investing in socket head cap screws as replacements, I have much better luck with allen wrenches then phillips head screw drivers
