Ever since I bought this bike it pops through the carbs when warming up but does seem to clear up other than a cough every now and again. It seems to run fine at all levels of throttle. the bike was jetted and 4-1 mac put on with pods before i bought it. My spark plugs look great. I guess I am not to concered about this problem I was wondering if it is something that was inharrited from the mods. Any input would be great if anyone else has delt with this. BTW the carbs have been synced, cleaned, it does run great when warmed up. thanks.

Have you done anything with the valves? my kz1000 does this same thing and i wonder if it is in the valve train maybe they need the lash adjusted if this is even possible. the other possibility is the o rings in the carbs may be leaking slightly. that could cause it too. it makes more sense that it would be in the valvtrain though because it almost clears up when its warm. ill check mine out and when i figure it out ill repost my solution.

If there's popping through the exhaust on deceleration with throttle closed, could enrich the pilot mixture (say 1/4 turn on each adjustment screw) and test ride.

Good Fortune! :)

Check the carb holders for leaks. Set the idle as low as it will go and still run; spray carb cleaner around the joint where each carb holder mates with the head. If the engine dies or the idle changes, you have a carb holder leak and should replace the holders. Ed

I have tried that but did not adjust the idle down. Idle is running at about 900rpm. I did not notice any change in idle. The boots look fairly new also.

there is no poping through the exhaust on decel. that i notice. Over all it is only when warming up. I checked all the plugs during the warm up and after riding the seem to be firing nicely.

I just purchased an 83 Spectre.Mine is completly stock. When cold, it does pop a bit. I thought it was just from being cold blooded. Runs great after warming up.

Just following up on this post here. I was able to adjust the air mixture to each carb clearing up the coughing coming from the carbs. It took me alot of time going back and forth to get it right. But as of now its gone.
