Engine/Carb idle problem was created by BrysonWood
Bike 1974 KZ400 less than 8k miles on it
ok to put this problem in a nutshell. it takes me a min of ten minutes to get the bike warm enough to run off of choke. BUT i have to turn the idle way up to get it to even stay on. after a while it starts to "warm" up enough to back out the idle needle then it becomes rid-able. i take of with the idle around 2100 and when i get to the end of the block the rpm go to about 3000 and i have to back off the idle more so. . . have to continue to do this a couple times until it is fully "warmed" up and stable. . . can someone give me some enlightenment as to why each and every time i have to adjust the idle needle on this bike ?. . .im sorry if this is confusing im trying to explain the best i can

Hi, I had a 76 KZ400, very good bike. It sounds like the idle, or pilot ciruit is partially plugged and needs to be cleaned. As the bike gets warmer the mixture appears richer to the engine and finally gets to a place where it will run normally.Thats a pretty old bike and if the carbs have never been serviced(cleaned), there have probably been a lot of winters that gas just set in the bowls and deposited varnish on the pilot jet,,which has only a few thousands hole to flow thru. 8k miles is not very much for a bike that old so I suspect there has been a lot of time it just sat, again which contributes to the above condition. They are good bikes though I put 40k miles on mine before I sold it.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks, around the carb holders and the intake boots? Could be leaking while the rubber is cold / hard, as the rubber softens up they seal up. I think i'm going through this with my '83 KZ550
