when I took the float off today the needle fell out into my hand, did I just learn to take the carbs off before taking the float off, or should it have stayed in?

If it's anything like my Mikuni carbs, it floats freely inside of the float needle seat and the only thing preventing it from falling is the float tang.

If you take the float off the needle will drop out.

You should be able to hold it in there while putting the float back on, then just be careful not to let the float drop/hang at full extension before the float bowl is reinstalled.

got it all put back together, and it is working just fine, I think next time I disassemble anything on the carbs, I'll take them off, I tried to save sometime, but ended up loosing time working with fat fingers in a pretty small space.
