Lean condition?

I have a Z750 LTD -83, BS34 carbs, 115 main and 45 pilot, stock airbox and filter. I also have almost "straight through" mufflers. The bike runs fine exept a little surging when i'm driving at low speed with just a little throttle, i would think up to 1/3 throttle, above 1/3 she pulls hard. It also idles bad and I can't seem to correct it with the pilotscrews. I'm about to change the pilot jets one or two sizes to 47.5 or 50. Does anyone have any suggestions about wich size I should use? Any other suggestions are welcome aswell.

Does adding a little choke reduce or increase the low speed surging?

Patton: A little choke is reducing surge, I'm also need to run it on choke half way out for quite a while, at least ten minutes before I can close it full.

Would also consider as possible causes for bad idle and low speed surging:
Pilot circuits not perfectly clean;
Poor sync;
Too low or mis-matched fuel levels;
Vacuum leak.
