79 KZ1000 ST Carb Q's

Tried searching but for some reason, pictures won't load in the older threads.

I'm trying to verify which carbs I have for my 1979 KZ1000 ST, when I bought the bike they were not installed because the carb holder boots were FUBAR'd (which I need to buy).

Cleaned out the carbs but didn't measure them, although I have pictures:

Are these stock?
Do I have the correct orientation for the accelerator pump?

Difficult to find an exploded view of carbs I can't identify haha.

If they are stock, will these holders work?
www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=3245
Seem to be the best price, still expensive though

The bike has a 4-1 header and muffler with no baffle, and 117.5 and 15 jets if I remember right.
Is that a good starting point?
I have stock air box but no filter, should I use that or go ahead and get pods?

Thanks in advance!

Those are the 28mm carbs stock to the ST, but the acc pump looks like it's all goofed up. The rod shouldn't be that long, the arm on the pump shouldn't be hanging that low as a result, and the three screw triangle metal bottom piece near the acc pump wasn't used, so maybe someone has added KZ650 parts or something, but hard to say. The carb boots at Z1 will work fine.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The accell pump is messed looking (like said), they work just fine with the accell pump dissable/blocked off.

Thanks guys!

I don't have a block off plate for the pump, so can I just leave it as is without the arm attached to anything?

Just want to get the bike running and make sure everything is cool, then I will really tear into it.

What block off plate?
The bike will run without the rod hooked up.
The acc. pumps fuel thru the rubber hoses and out the brass tubes sticking up in the throat of the carbs.

Thanks Rex, I think I understand how the pump works now, I meant block off plate as if it needed one so it wasn't squirting fuel everywhere else.

Ordering parts today, hopefully the bike will start this weekend!

I looked at my carbs, which just happen to be off of the bike right now (finishing up rebuild), and I think I figured out your accel. pump problem. Carbs #2 and #3 appear to be reversed on your holder: #2 is in #3's position, and vice-versa. If you swap those 2 carb around and reverse the direction of the accel. pump arm, this will put the actuator shaft in a more vertical position, and you will be able to adjust it properly. This will require resynching because you have to remove the shaft that connects all the carbs together.

In a related story, you also appear to be missing the Idle Adjusting Screw assembly in it's entirety. You may be able to get by with deleting the accel. pump, but you really need the idle adjuster knob and the return spring for the throttle shaft pulley. Do you have these parts? If you don't have a FSM, you need one now! Sorry about all the bad news, but it's better to know now than wonder later.

I definitely agree now that I can search for other pics of these carbs, the middle ones need to swap places.

Is the idle adjustment screw on the bottom between the bowls? Or where its supposed to be?

What do you mean by return spring?
They seems to move fine using the throttle, snap back closed.

Sorry, whats a FSM?
Factory Service Manual?
Trying to get my hands on one ASAP!
Until then, I have you guys =)

Total noob to carbs here, rebuilt one on my 4wheeler once, but it was insanely simple since it was in the correct shape with all the pieces so I just had to remember where everything went.

Big thanks for the warnings and help!
Keep it coming for sure!
Pictures help =P

FSM is Factory Service (Shop) Manual.

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc.
Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

You can tell if the carb bodies are reversed by looking at the air mixture screws on top of the carbs. If they all 4 face out where you can see them the carbs are correct, at least the main bodies. For sure the bowls are reversed on #2 and 3, but the main carbs most likely not. Swapping back 2 and 3 bowls won't take any effort.
