BS 34 variants???

Does anyone know how many mikuni bs34 variants there are? Or if they exist? A guy gave me a set of carbs that needed to be cleaned. I ripped em apart, cleaned the yeears of gunk and rust out and put em together. I pulled my carbs off today and was going to try those out but there are a few differences. The are the same size, same configuration front and back except at the pod side or the intake side. Around the intake I theres the slot at the bottom and four jets around the intake. These carbs only have 2, one jet on each side. Are these bs 34's? And will they work on my kz1000j?

Recently dealing with bs34 carbs (2 variants) has led to me to find out there are several. One type comes on I believe its Yamaha, while kzs have two types. One is on the 750s and another on the 1000's. The kzs seem to have one jetted mains at 117.5 and the larger 1000cc jetted at 135(or mabye its 137?). While the Yamaha's appear to have bleed type pilot jets (multiple holes in the side of the pilots) and the the kzs seem to all use non-bleed pilots with a straight pass through hole. One type uses metal plugs with an o-ring on the pilot jet plugs while another uses rubber plugs. One has a removable air jet for the (choke??) passage while another does not. Gets a bit confusing but most parts are interchangeable and not a big deal. I believe there are also bs34ss carbs as well as flat slide and round slide types. I cannot tell you the difference between the ones you have though sorry.

Well I installed them and cleaned my tank and hooked the ol bike up with an oil change. As soon as I go get a fuel filter I will try and start it tonight. I hope she runs good, cause I'm ready to ride. Last year my old carbs were just giving me so much trouble, so I figured if I screwed up rebuilding these free carbs no loss except time. I may video it, just in case something rediculous happens. Thanks for the info on the carbs

Good luck starting it up! Mine leaked fuel out of one of the air filter and i ended up replacing a float needle but otherwise it went pretty well, I'm sure yours will too!

Ok, so there are a few more differences on the carbs. I think I have the vac lines at the top of the carbs hooked up right. So from the tank to the filter, to the carbs, the hose leads down between the two middle carbs as the fuel inlet. But between the 1 and 2nd and 3rd and 4th carbs there are two more inlets(or outlets). Do you guys think I need to just put a line in from one inlet to the other since fuel is already fed into the middle one? Yeah, I know need pics, I will post them later after I get out of the shop. Any input let me know. And since I am running the pods (yeah shoot me later), how do you guys hook up your vac lines? 1st and 4th are hooked into each other, the 2nd to the petcock and the 3rd vac plugged? I dunno, thats how the other carbs were hooked up. Anyway, sock it to me fellas.

Yes my vacuum petcock line is on the 2nd carb and all the other vacuum lines are plugged. There was a single line that was teed to two of the carbs originally but i removed the entire emissions setup that existed for it. Those two tees your seeing to the side of the fuel inlet are fuel vents. Some people run a hose to exit it below the bike i just leave them open.

Thanks for the wg site, it helped out alot. And thanks OMG for clearing up the tees at the back of the carbs. So I hooked everything up and opened the petcock. No leaks (as far as I can tell). I killed the battery trying to start it though, battery is on the trickle charge and I will try again in a bit. Maybe some starting fluid might help? I dunno, parked it maybe 6 mos ago. I'll let ya fellas know. Thanks again.

A shot of starting fluid may be just what it needs :cheer:

So I tried to start the bike today. No luck, except for on the go juice (starting fluid). When I gave her a shot in the carbs she revved to infiniti. Sounded so good, but scared the crap outta me. I'm not sure what to do next, figured I would take the bowls back off and make sure theres no more junk in the carbs, although I know I did a good job cleaning them. I even took the tank down and drained it and filled it a few times to make sure there was no junk as well as replace the filter. Any suggestions?

If you removed and cleaned the pilots I might suspect an air leak. If you pull the carbs back off remove the carb holders and attach them with some gasoline safe gasket sealer. Did you pull the floats off and remove the float needles and clean those as well, mine were pretty dirty while the rest of the carbs were very clean.

Yeah, I did remove the float needles. I soaked em for a good bit. After looking over a few things I just realized something. I remember seeing a plug in the bottom and read a few of the other postings about "what is that plug" and "how do I remove that plug"....I didn't mess with the plug..could this be an issue? The carbs had pieces (not residue but chunks) of rust, lots of soaking and blowing and spraying but i got most of it out. Another question, after I take the main jet and the washer out, how do I get the orifice tube (or jet in the tube?) out? Does that need to come out for a cleaning? I will pull them off this weekend and rtv the boots up, theyre not cracked or anything...actually in good shape.
