I *know* I can use the clear tube but I've got the carb bank on the bench and want to check it but have no manual.

I have searched the posts but still haven't found float height -- I want to get this sucker running today for the 1st time!!

Anyone know what float height should be, 1981 kz650 (stock everything)

Between 22 - 26 mm for VM type carbs. Note exactly sure for yours, but 24 would be fine, all identicle is desired. Final height when using clear tube method should be 4-5 mm below bowl edge.

Some people will say 2-3, but this ends up being slightly too rich for hot days.

Best of luck.

Yeah, this happens often, which is why taking the time to setup a jig for doing them wet style on the bench is a big time saver in the end.

Just get an old gas tank from a lawn mower or something with a shutoff, and put your carbs in a vise. Tie up or shelf the tank above the carbs, and with some clear fuel line, you're good to go.

Well, the best way is to do the Service Fuel Level Check: 3mm +/- 1mm below the carb body.

The float height measurement is 23mm +/- 1mm with the bowl gasket removed (page 3-4 in my manual - there's a photo). Carbs upside down and the ruler placed on the carb body's gasket mating surface.

I set mine meticulously dry, then checked the fuel level: none of them were the same, so I redid them wet.

This page has a factory manual for your bike... jarlef Z650

Hey Martin thanks for your pointer to the shop manual! I have to do a valve adjustment if I get this baby fired up today, the manual will come in handy.

I do not expect to find the tappet clearances out of spec - this CSR 650 has only 17,300 miles on her. But I do that (valve check) as part of my revival process each time, thanks Martin for the manual!

If I knew how and that it was Okay, I would add this Kz650 CSR 'H1' factory shop manual to our forum's archive under 'Kz Information/Filebase' at the top.

Anyone know the process for doing that?

I don’t know if you’ve tried to adjust the valves yet, but, they utilize a shim under bucket design which requires it to be checked with the engine cold, and if any are out of spec, you have to remove the cam to swap shims. I just did mine. Now I’m trying to set float height, but, I have later model cv carbs.

You should take care of the valves before messing with the carbs. If you do the carbs first and then find some of the valves out of spec, you will need to do the carbs again. A badly out of spec valve can alter the signal that the carb gets.

You will need to chat with one of the KZR moderators about posting the manual.
