Usually the gas line goes directly from the petcock to the carb. And fuel from the carb overflow eventually finds its way to the floor.
Am wondering if the issue at hand involves overflow tubes from the carb float bowls? And "came off" from where? Leaving the other end attached to what? Can't get the tube reseated to what?
A common issue is where petcock fails (for whatever reason) to stop fuel flow into carb, which fuel then continuously flows through a leaking float valve and overfills the bowl, and the bowl overflows through tubes eventually leading to the floor.
The danger is possibility of fuel overflow also making its way into the crankcase (instead of onto the floor) due to a clogged overflow circuit in one of the float bowls. Which then contaminates the oil supply.
Good Fortune!

I believe your carburetor overflow tubing is directed to the airbox. The tubing from the four carbs connects to two Y-fittings; the airbox also has a piece of tubing connected to its underside. My guess is that there's a carb overflow problem: perhaps a float needle valve isn't seating properly. Maybe the petcock was left in the PRI position. Just a couple of thoughts.

I am having the same problem with my '82 KZ1000-K2. On mine, there wasn't a hose coming off the bottom of the airbox, so the gas was dripping on to everything before hitting the floor. This is my first bike, so my friend had to come over and show me how to disconnect the gas tank (lost about 3/4 of a tank before he showed me) and we figured out that the petcock is leaking... we also reached the same conclusion, that the float bowls are also stuck.
My current plan of action is to find a replacement petcock online and get it shipped out, then to see if I can start the bike (which I couldn't due to flooded carbs) and run some seafoam though the system to see if that helps the stuck float bowls. If it does not, then we are going to dig into the carbs.
I am going to keep searching for a replacement petcock, but in case I don't find it, anyone know a good place for one?

Would sniff-test crankcase oil for gasoline odor, and examine physical quality of the oil, because the oil may be contaminated from being diluted with fuel.
If so, would change oil and filter, and not run the engine until resolving the issue.

You could get a K&L rebuild kit from Z1Enterprises.com if yours isn't in terrible shape, ie if the mating surfaces don't appear to be shot. Z1 might be able to get an oem kit if those are still available. Also, if you want a new petcock, one from a late model police bike might work - ~2005 or thereabouts. I'm fairly sure the bolt-hole spacing on those is 34mm (from cross-referencing a petcock from an 83 KZ650-CSR).
